I just received my new Shivworks Loco. The grind was ever-so-slighty off, but I was able to fix it easily. The blade is a simple triangle, flat ground, and rather thick. It cuts fine and can shave hair, and the tip is very needlelike. The handle fits into the curl of the forefinger and the knife is very stable.

I got the knife to wear with my White over Gray and As-for-Class, West Point's equivilants of the Class B. After a bit of experimentation, I attached the knife like a neck knife and tucked it between my collar and my neck. I know that it was designed as a last ditch defense weapon, but I just want a sharp, small utility knife. My roomate thinks I'm crazy.

I liked the looks of that little knife, and got to handle one today at our NJKCA meeting. It is a great piece of equipment! Use it well :D

I've got a ShivWorks ClinchPick and it is my most-carried SD fixed blade. After getting it, I realized I was a lot more likely to carry it than the larger Disciple, so I never got a Disciple although it took a lot of self-control, since the Disciple was the knife I was really looking forward to. On the other hand, the little lapel knives like the Loco have never appealed to me, and I think you're right to not think of it as a SD piece.

Julian: Obviously you haven't seen the Loco in the hands of SouthNarc! The Loco can be employed as a SD tool.

Congrats on the new knife Will!

Should have phrased that differently - I'm sure SouthNarc and the Shivworks folks wouldn't have produced the Loco if it wasn't a viable SD tool - I've got the Shivworks DVD and am more than impressed. I just think the lapel knives are best left to undercover LEOs, special ops folks and others that can train nearly full time and need tools for every imaginable situation, and that "regular folks" are barely going to have enough time to work on basic firearm/edged weapon/impact tool/empty hand skills, without getting into the more esoteric stuff like lapel knives. But you're right - if someone thinks that they can use the Loco as an effective part of their SD program - go for it!

Not to beat a dead horse, but again, I think of Fred Perrin's statement "There are no tactical knives, only tactical minds." In the hands of an expert, anything is a brutal weapon. These guys could probably kick your butt with a toothpick! But, too many people say "Gee, SouthNarc could put you in pieces in 5 seconds with that thing, so can I" not understanding that it's not the tool, but the user. I will say that that crew definitely put a lot of time in developing that lne of knives. I made a custom piece of SouthNarc years ago while he was looking for knives for ShivWorks, long before the company became a reality. VEry cool niche market, IMHO!

Ive seen the SouthNarc DVD and they could probably tear you to pieces in 5 seconds with a long fingernail. I, on the other hand could probably butter the s#$t out of a slice of toast with a Shivworks Loco. Its all about skills, tactical shmactical. Fred Perrin is dead on.

Well, I know that for a fact. I have at least a few inches and certainly a few pounds on SouthNarc, but he had me pinned to the floor in a flash yesterday at his seminar. He's a lot of KICK A$$ in a small package!
