Wow, Tom Maringer's new dagger is awesome. After all these years he still has it. And if he's still just trying to get his mojo back then they'll only be getting better. The take down construction is fantastic. When it's all together you can't tell that there are that many separate pieces to the thing. Enjoy!!

Very nice, I thought he had completely stopped his knifemaking work.

Blade is D-2 steel. Toggle-tang takedown style. Handle and scabbard are stainless steel wire wrap over ash wood. All other exterior fittings are 304 stainless. Toggle is W-2 carbon steel. Signature, serial number, and date appears on the tang, parts are numbered and marked to show the correct assembly order and orientation. Stainless collars and scabbard tip are TIG weldments. The allen screw through the pommel snugs everything up securely.

I had stopped making knives for 12 years, but there were a few designs that have been kicking around in my head. It took me years to work out all the details of this toggle-tang construction, which is basically a modified Japanese tang style. Grinding is harder because now I have to use reading glasses to see anything close, so I just slow down and take more time. I had to raise the grinder up four inches to bring the wheel closer so I wouldn't get a crick in my back. I am interested in taking the sword-making techniques and applying them to slim blades like this. I also have a lot of new tools and materials in the shop from the years of doing other kinds of metalwork.

Bernie has been egging me about making something for a couple years now! Finally happened!

Tom,

It's great to see you here. I have been an admirer of your work since a couple articles in the French magazine La Passion des Couteaux, back in the early 90's (or is it the 80's? Long time...) I for one hope to see many more pieces coming from your shop in the future. You have a unique eye for, in particular and in my opinion, European swords.

Glad to see you back at the bench. The dagger is very impressive indeed. I particularly like the "exploded" pic.

Isn't it refreshing to see a piece that is absolutely original in every way?

You could see that knife across a room and it would scream "Maringer".

Thats cool in my book.

Females tend to get stuff done...if it is the Bernie that I know....

I'd be happy to take one if you are in the mood to make another, and promise not to sell it either. It would be in great company with some other rare pieces from Maragni, Cashen, Tim Wright/Meier/Katz, Baldwin......

Best Regards,

I'm really glad to see Tom making these, again. I drooled over these at a NY show or two back in the '90s. Bernie is to be congratulated for persistence! and Tom for his skill!

If you're going to make more I'd like to be in line, too. Times change but these were always special.

Wow... somebody still has a tee shirt! Those are classics. I still have the master artwork and have been thinking we might need to do another run of those. For those not familiar with it, here is a rendition of the pen and ink artwork done for me by James Yale. We did a photoshoot with my son Woody (now 25!) and one of my swords. This copy has been brutally compressed to make it small enough to post, but the master copy is very clean and crisp.

Yes , Tom there is (at least) one T shirt around !

I bought it at Paris SICAC (many) years ago and still have it in good shape !

The boy and and the dragon are on the front.

But there is a Celtic shield on the back with the words "Maringer swords " on , a sword lays on the shield , a scabbard is on the ground.

Then , under the shield , sword and scabbard are the words " of SPRINGDALE , ARKANSAS in service to Swordsmen "

I have catalogs from that time too.
