It's called a pricker, actually. Like a marlingspike, but smaller and with a handle. It is used specifically for knotting and fancy work. Great for drawing up complex knots or working with smaller cord, even in hand stitching things like chafing gear of canvas.

1/4" Brass shank, spalted pecan handle I collected the wood from a buddy who had a tree go down. Turned, shaped, polished and finished by me. Overall is 5.25" and shank is 2 7/8".

This is a gift for a fellow forumite, along with a more traditional working spike. The other spike is not finished yet.

Let me know what you think...

That is truly beautiful! A work of art!

That is one fantastic looking marlinspike. Nice work sir.

Xander that is a great tool - beautiful and funtional! I love the pecan wth the polished brass - will that tarnish or is it lacquered?
Great work !

Thanx everyone! It means a lot to me.

Gnarly, I know you will enjoy this fine tool!

Jmac30 - The brass is not lacquered, it can tarnish. Personally, I feel tarnish and patina are just earned character, but with a small amount of maintenance the high lustre finish can be maintained easily.

Xander,I am truly impressed. You have skills homie.

Thanx Kevin, and thank you for letting me take the pecan wood! I'll get some cut up into scales for your next knife. Now we just have to get you to make one of these next!

There is a lot more going into this care package for Gnarly, but its all a surprise! He will have to wait until it gets there!

That's beautiful, Xander! Do you make them to sell; or was this just a individual project?

Happy Birthday, Xander!

This is all upside down! I'm the lucky bastage, getting all the gifts : custom Marlinspike, pricker & fid!

WTH?!?!

Will get even, somehow!

~Gnarly

Haha, no worries Gnarly. Just use 'em and learn some new knots. Maybe when you retire and go sailing, you'll make it out west and need some crew.

Thnx, btw!
