I've been wanting a medium sized fixed blade for quite a while now and I really like the Master Hunter. I was wondering if anyone has the new one in 3v or if you have the San Mai III version what do you think? I am especially interested in the sheath and if the edge of the blade rubs the inside of the sheath like some other Cold Steel knives do. Let me know guys thanks!

I have both the new 3v and the San Mai versions of the Master Hunter. The bade taper is different on the 3v version which makes the blade a bit thinner. The San Mai blade is 3/16 almost all the way to the tip. The 3v knife starts to taper to the tip much sooner and it also has more belly. I myself like the 3v for that fact. The San Mai may be a better option if you're looking for the ultimate in strength, but the 3v most likely will cut/slice better....I haven't had much of a chance yet to compare the two...though the 3v came much sharper from the factory. The sheath fit is pretty good on both versions (3v won't fit in the San Mai sheath as the blade belly is greater). I don't notice excessive rub on the blade on either knife/sheath combo. Hope this helps.

BTW.....There is another thread here that shows pictures of the new 3v blade shape.

Thanks a lot I appriciate it I'll probably end up getting the 3V version because I definitely prefer more of a belly. Plus I would like to check out the 3V steel and the new DLC coating.

There are many cold steel hunting knives which are perfect for outdoors survival trips and they do come with knife sheath also.

I am not a fan of cold steel first off but really want to try 3v also. This looks like the least expensive way to try it.... I may break my cold steel humbug and try one out.

Using a better grade steel allows a maker to construct a slimmer knife and a thinner edge to increase performance. In the case of 3V I fully expect the knife to still equal or exceed the strength of the much thicker AUS8 version.

I have the SMIII Master Hunter-Great Knife. Sheath? Not so much. I am not a fan of Glass Reinforced Nylon sheaths. So I replaced it with a Spec Ops Mini Combat Master Sheath.

Thread needs pics! Received this knife last week and I am pretty much enamored with it. It really is a fantastic knife. I am a fan of well ground blades and that is the first thing you notice about this guy. It is ground extremely well, nice and thin down to the edge, A LOT of belly, and an excellent distal taper. Really well done... and even though its a 3/16" thick, the knife cuts really really well because it is ground nicely. Ive been whittling, carving, and using it for daily cutting chores. The handle is something else that is a surprise, most of the pics seem to make the handle seem flat/square, but it actually has some mild contour to it making it very comfortable to handle and work with. I am pretty impressed with the 3v steel, came with a laser edge, seems to be keeping it well, and it is a very aggressive type edge. Real crisp and "grabby." It has CS new DLC type coating which is nothing like the painted type stuff they have used in the past, this is nicely done, all though I wish it was just a satin type finish, but I understand. The sheath is nice, I am not a fan of nylon belt loops/dangler type set ups, so after playing around with a few configurations I just went ahead and ditched it for a spyderco G clip and I am wearing it horizontal/crossdraw on my front left side. It is just almost to big to do this with, as I usually only carry smaller knives this way, but It works and is comfy. The sheath also does not have any wiggle, and has good retention of the blade. Its been on my belt since it showed up, and has fallen right in my edc... Really think Cold Steel knocked it out of the park with this blades "redesign". If you are on the fence go ahead and jump off, around a hundred bucks for an excellently ground piece of 3v? No brainer...

Awesome distal taper... Good job CS...

A few comparisons with a couple of my favorite "belt knives".

With my SYKCO 311 EDC

With my well loved Recon Scout

With my BK15...

The Spyderco G-clip will work on many of the newer CS sheaths if you prefer a higher carry than the web danglers. I personally like the higher ride, plus you have many more carry options, right, left, vertical, horizontal, canted, and IWB with or without belt. I use them on my custom sheaths other than the Southern Comforts. (disclaimer: I designed the Spyderco G-Clip, so am naturally predisposed to using them.)

Say Heah Everybody, Yeah, I got the Master Hunter in the
S M III, Which I teamed up with my C. S. Kukuri Plus in the O1. A lovely piece of kit. Even though I'm buying my Fox Bushcraft Parang for a One Tool Option, I think I'm going to team it with my Master Hunter in 3V, just incase and to cover more bases. Some habit's are hard to break. I wish I could get a M H in the S M III, because C. S. Zero Quenches their blades, It's similar to S. O. G.'s Cryo Temp. And that does alot to my Seal Pup Elite TiNi as far as edge retention, My S. O. G. Seal Pup Elite TiNi holds a a pretty good edge So when C. S. had Camillus make their U. S. A. made knives. They Zero Quenched them and that's why they used the proprietary name CarbonV. All the CarbonV blade was a 1095 CroVan but Zero Quenched. That I don't understand, Why did Becker continued making his Becker's in the same steel except by Ka-Bar now, and Cold Steel stopped making the CarbonV. I'm sure Ka-Bar can Cryo blades too. Atkease I think they could. Maybe they just deferentially temper them now. Any info on this, Puh-lease chime in. I would like to know. Thanx You in advance.,,.

ive used one in 3v in the woods, mostly for slicing small branches, sticker bushes out of the way of a trail. cuts real good, very sharp, didnt need sharpening afterwards.i stole it off another exchange for 60.00 cant beat that.Ive toyed with getting a 4max,but this I feel does the job fine for what I need at way less of a price.

The Dutch Crafting Knives YouTube channel is great. They seem to be all about the CPM 3V.

This Aussie guy has a pretty clever edge retention test ongoing. He's doing many of the latest steels including 3V. Here's his latest test on ZPD 189 . @ the end ( 6:11 ) he lists his results to date.
