New matches ,waterproof etc

They have been around for years. I light them by jamming them into the striking pad at a 45 degree angle.

The slightly shorter "Lifeboat Match" has been NATO issue for thirty years. NATO stock number V017-9920-99-737-1041

I've had them for a few years. They get the job done. I bought a few standard K&M matchcases, and a long one that fits the storm-proof ones. When I moved to australia, I brought the storm-proofs, but couldn't figure out a way to bring any strike-anywhere matches, so I'm pretty much only using lighters and firesteels now. But the UCO ones are on hand for back-up kits.

Yes, these have been around forever and work very well.

-------------------

The match is coated in varnish and is meant to be 'chipped' off the head for striking. This prevents the varnish from clogging or causing premature failure to the striker surface.

I've made my own matches using jute twine wrapped around a strike anywhere match and dipped them in paraffin wax. I chip the wax off with a thumbnail and when I strike them, the jute makes a great tinder.

REI sells the same thing as their own brand. I've tried them, but don't like them. They burn like crazy - and as advertised - for 10 seconds, then go out, no matter what. I need something that burns longer...
