I'm thinking about getting the Maxpedition Proteus Versipack:

Anyone have any experience with this bag? I'd like to know how it works as a general gear bag, what accessories are available to complement it, and where the best place would be to purchase it. Also, I'd like to know of any alternatives that closely resemble this bag (particularly cheaper :D ). Sorry if that's too many questions...:)

George just curious I guess! :D

I ordered one a couple of days ago. It should be here tomorrow. I thought a long time between the Proteus and the Devil Dog. I thought the Devil Dog, in the end, was too big for what I needed; although I wish the Proteus was a hair bigger.

I ordered a mini-rolly poly to go with it, to hold a water bottle. That would be attached to either one of the side pockets or the front pocket (if I am not mistaken) via short malice clips. I would suggest getting a mini rolly poly with it, and a pair of short malice clips.

I ordered from BF's own 1sks. Very good service.

I have a black Proteus and am very pleased with it. Perfect size for me.

What accessories are available for it? I've never heard of the mini-rolly poly....malice clips....etc. What else is there? got pics? links?

After reading the above, I found these accessories:

Malice Clips:

Rolly Polly:

Tube Sheaths:

Cocoon Sheaths:

I'm guessing that all of these will attach to the Proteus with the Malice Clips, am I right? Are there other accessories?

Are there other accessories?
All of Maxpedition's own small packs will attach to each it, like the phone pouch or the waist pouches. And they have their own attachments built-in, the same straps that attach them to a belt.

cool accessories. Do you have links to their other pouches - phone, for example?

Does anyone have a heads up on the new Gear Sliingers line? They have a small teaster pic on their cataloge page but no active link.

Well, I received my Proteus yesterday and I love it. I also purchased an M1 and M2 Pack to go with it and a pack of 4 malice clips to attach them to the Proteus. They are all constructed really well. So well, that I ordered some tube sheaths yesterday that I will attach also. I love the modular aspect of Maxpedition's gear. It allows you to customize your packs in an infinite number of ways. Once I get everything in, I'll try to take some pics of how I got it set up. A picture's worth a thousand words...:D

Hi All-

I've got the Proteus in black with a medium Maxpedition cellular telephone holster (CP-M) attached to the rear webbing with velcro. The telephone is completely protected and is easy to access...plus the pathetic little ringer is much easier to hear than if the telephone was shoved into a pocket.

In terms of constructive criticism, I wish that the compression straps would run BEHIND the smaller exterior zipper pocket and around the bag. The smaller horizontal pocket is where I keep my wallet and it's a pain-in-the-you-know-what to have to unclip two fastex buckles and one zipper just to access the wallet compartment...especially if you have to repeat this procedure many times per day.

Enjoy your new Maxpedition stuff...the build quality is fantastic.
