Hello all, Sean here from Canada. First post, just thought I'd introduce myself and show off my new purchase (hmm...maybe not).

After much internet research and a visit to a local knife retailer to be sure, I walked out with a Benchmade 470-1 Emissary -- perfect for my needs.

I'm not sure if this knife will lead to more down the road as I'm new to this, but do have an appreciation for quality hardware.

Cheers,
Sean

Good choice - but definitely not inexpensive! Tell us why you chose the 470-1 and why it's "perfect for my needs."

Well, with my limited knowledge, I'd had just a few criteria in mind: around 4" closed, not too wide when closed, good blade material (with some belly), and a deep pocket clip. So, I had it narrowed down to the 470, a Mcusta bamboo, and a Spyderco Sage (though I suspected this one to be longer and wider than I wanted). I hope I don't come across as arrogant for blowing this much on a first knife, but if there's one thing I've learned about myself at the age of 45, it's that I appreciate quality and buying right the first time saves money in the end.

Welcome from a fellow ontarian

Thanks Rare blade, nice to here from a fellow Canuck. I met a nice fella in the store who was helpful with advice re a sharpening kit I ended up buying as well. I should have asked for his forum name...maybe he'll see this thread and say hello.

It looks like you made a very good choice.
I hesitated between the emissary and the 943... At the end I chosen the Osborne but the emissary has always appealed me ;)

Good answer! with well thought out reasoning.

I settled on the 943 also Both are great knives though

Thanks fellas.

Ah yes, the 940 series. The 940 was also in the running (after watching TheProphetR's great review) thinking the longer length might be alright. The 940 definitely felt better in the hand but I really did prefer the deep pocket clip on the Emissary. Also, I thought grabbing the smaller Emissary first left room for adding another larger piece down the road :)

I also had the pleasure of handling a small sebenza, what a beauty that is.

I've been having fun with the 470 today, the kids also were very impressed with my paper test demonstration, lol.

Cheers,
Sean

Welcome from Gatineau Quebec! I wanted to buy the Emissary, felt good in the hands, had the specs I wanted, but just not a fan of assisted opening. I went with the 707 Sequel, the reason being it was just better for MY edc. Still looking at it tho...really tempting.

Thank you! I understand these things are very personal, and was not sure about this assist opening myself, but I do like it after owning. I am really enjoying this one -- I don't feel it in the poket at all and am still able to get my phone out without damaging it or my hand. It's the perfect EDC pocket knife for me. However, I do envisoin a larger folder down the road, maybe from Santa.

I think you'll find most folks wish they had started with something high end. I can tell you my first was a Spyderco Tenacious and I found myself blowing almost 4x as much to get Yojimbo 2 like two weeks after buying the Tenacious. I love my Tenacious and still carry it from time to time but I kinda wish I had saved the money on it and jumped right in with the Yojimbo.

I call it Knife Christmas! Happy that you like it, thats the most important thing. Buying a knife and ending up not liking it is not cool, and expensive. Have a good one buddy!
