Hello all. I just recently got into making knives and figured a membership here would be a huge help if I have any questions. Plus I know I can find tons of good ideas for my next knife.
I started making kydex gun holsters a few years ago, and got pretty damn good at it, if I don't say so myself. Heres a few pics of the creations Ive made doing that so far. I figure if I have the patience to do that, I can have a little more patience and make some nice knives.
S&W M&P Shield in 9mm
Glock 19 w/ TLR-3
M&P9 console "holster"
And heres my baby. I made this one for my FNP45 Tactical with a Surefire X300.
Ive made tons of other holsters, but these are a few of my favorites/best. Ive also made sheaths for my barblades (Im a bartender, so I use them everyday.)
No onto the knife Im working on.
This is my first knife Ive ever attempted to do. If it works out like my holster making, then after making 2-3 Ill be making some top notch equipment. Plus I already know I can make some badass sheaths for them.
I started out with some 3/16" O1 tool steel. I originally started out with a jig for hand filing. It's the T shaped one you see with the file attached to a metal rod riding in an eyebolt. It worked awesome, but takes a LONG time to get the results I want. I ended up picking up a 1x30 belt sander from Harbor Freight when it was on sale, and I am moving a lot faster. I accidentally got a convex grind after getting that, and decided I like it, so did that on both sides.
This is what i have right now. The larger holes are just for making it lighter. They are all over the place because I have some old dull bits that ended up walking on me, but Im not worried about it since they will be under the handles.
Im going to take a little more off of the front of the handle to make a space for my other three fingers to ride and make the handle a little smaller overall.
For the handles Im using some black palm wood. Here Ive got one side roughly mocked up.
I actually injured myself pretty badly today working on it. I was drilling the lowest large hole, and had it clamped down while I was drilling (with a cordless hand drill, I plan on getting a small drill press down the line).
I was drilling that last hole, and took it out of the clamps to clean up the ALMOST finished hole. Well the old dull bit I was using bit into the metal and didn't cut, and it spun around on me and I ended up with this.
I thought it was my bone showing but it is actually a tendon. Thank god I didn't cut through that. 3 X-rays, two stitches, one tetanus shot, and a partridge in a pear tree later Im back home and working on it again.
I plan on learning all I can from you guys, so if you have any advice (apart from not drilling knives that arent clamped down lol) Feel free to share.
And if any of you guys have any Kydex related questions, feel free to ask away.
Eric
