Howdy y'all! New guy from the Dallas, TX area and I figured I'd jump in and say hi here since I don't see a new member intro section. I've been a member here for almost a month and I finally feel like I have something worthy to post after doing a lot of reading and drooling over your Beckers. More on that later, first a review of my history with knives in general.

Though I lived in Alaska for much of my childhood I never used a blade much except for splitting firewood with my dad's axe. Since childhood I've always owned, but not always carried, some sort of basic pocket knife. I've had a few SAK's over the years, as well as a number of relative no-name folders I picked up at Walmart, Academy or from a tool catalog at work (Schrade, Proto, a couple nameless Chinese made Spyderco knock-offs.) Sometime in my mid thirties I decided that EDC'ing a folder was a prudent thing to do. One day in 2009 I decided I needed a "quality" knife and walked out of REI with a Benchmade Barrage 580S. First time I ever spent more than $30 on a knife! It's been my trusty EDC blade for almost four years now. I also EDC an SAK SilverTech Huntsman for light utility work and the scissors, tweezers, etc. A couple years ago I got my CHL and bought and incorporated my first fixed blades into my EDC, the Ka-Bar TDI. I have a small and a large version I carry depending on wardrobe selection. These are carried for SD and CC weapon retention, and though I have occasionally used them to open packages, they rarely see the outside of their sheaths.

A few months ago I decided having a "regular" fixed blade might be handy, especially a larger utility blade that could also serve well in a fight if worse comes to worse. I did lots of reading on this site and others and I zeroed in on the BK 10 as my first Becker and standard fixed blade knife. I soon ordered canvas handles and custom sheath from 710 Custom to personalize it a bit, and started shopping for my next Becker almost immediately. Due to price and other practical constraints I went with the BK 14 as my second Becker, but the 16, 9, and 5 are next on my list. In the interest of full disclosure I should mention that I don't have much practical use for these knives at the moment. I live in a suburb of Dallas and rarely get out camping or backpacking like I used to. I hope to change that soon, and I wanted some competent tools at my disposal for that day. There also exists the possibility that I may need to harvest from the little greenbelt behind my house should heck freeze over one of these days.

Even though I don't have any batoning or other bushcrafting planned I couldn't just sit on these beauties so I decided to give them a few of the popular mods I've seen on this forum. I started with deepening the laser etching with PCB etchant then proceeded to strip the factory coating and finally force a patina. I even made a homemade strop from the instructions I found in this sub-forum, though I still need to get some compound and learn about knife sharpening in general.

Thanks to the forum and especially to all the Beckerheads for fueling my discovery and love of the BK line of knives. I don't know if I'll ever have what it takes to be a Beckerhead myself, but I love my first two Beckers and can't wait for my next. Pics incoming once I resize and upload.

That's a great first post and introduction. Hang around, get to know everybody and you'll be a Beckerhead before you know it. Welcome aboard.

Pics or it didn't happen!

Can't believe I'm the first to say it.

Good to have you, welcome!

I was going to post pics in my OP but realized they needed resizing, sorry for the delay! :)

Here's the BK 10 in its original glory, and the 14 almost original. I forgot to take pics of it before applying the PCB etchant.

Both of my Beckers mid-strip. The 14 came clean after one application of Kleanstrip but the 10 took three applications to get everything off the handle.

Some post-strip pics. I kinda liked the finish but note the difference in each knife toward the tip. This was bare clean metal so it must have existed before the coating. Maybe some of y'all can explain why the tips have a different finish.

And then To force the patina. I had read so many different methods and I had settled on a mustard for the 14 and a mayo for the 10, but first I gave them each a 5 minute soak in white vinegar as a light "base coat." Then I opened the fridge and saw some tartar sauce that was almost out of date so the 10 got a taste of it for about an hour.

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I seem to be hitting a limit for my subscription level. I read the FAQ's but I didn't see any specifics other than "limited" attachments for the basic membership. I did resize all my pics and upload to a cloud service but when posting them via URL I still get the file too big warning. I'll try posting the rest later, the patina came out pretty good IMO. It was my first attempt but I did have expert guidance.

Welcome to the forum! Nice pics and introduction. The 10 and 14 are great, I enjoy mine very much, the 14 has become my dedicated steak knife and after I stripped and polished the blade a very nice patina is forming. You said that you want a 5, and I will say that is a great choice too, a great kitchen and camp knife. Well really, you can't go wrong with any Becker product, and you'll probably end up with a few of them sooner than you think :D

Welcome! Great knife choices there. I use photobucket and link my images from a hosting site because not much room is given here even with a subscription. Hope this helps.

I tried using a similar hosting site but still got an error after resizing them to spec. I think I figured it out though, thanks.

I wasn't happy with the 10 after one "coat" so I applied a second. And meanwhile, the 14 was doing a brown mustard bath, but I wasn't satisfied after its first wash either so it was swiftly met with a dose of cocktail sauce. I was totally improvising at this point, knowing I could start form scratch if I needed to.

I am pretty pleased with the final results, now I just need to put some wear on these blades so I can learn to sharpen them back to health!

Thanks for the warm welcomes. I look forward to learning more about these great knives as the inevitable accumulation continues!

Welcome to our little corner of the asylum. Love the patinas! Very unique; the 14 looks almost marbleized.
On a side note, if you did get a paying membership you should update your user group so that it shows as such.

Welcome, welcome.......

I really like the finishes you have achieved........ Especially on the Ten.....

I really hope you get a chance to use your new babies soon and that you are happy with their performance.....

Thanks for buying Beckers and many thanks for the excellent post and pix.......

Welcome, and great first post! Nice job on the patinas too. I don't get that much "dirt time" myself but I have my kids collect sticks at the park so I can bring them home and use my knives on sharpening my skills I.e. Figure four trap, friction fire, etc.
Do yourself a favor and get a bk5, strip it and use it in your kitchen. Best food prep knife ever!

Welcome to the madness. Nice mods and pics!!

The 5 is an awesome kitchen knife....and it can hold its own in the wild. You will not be wrong in either setting!

Nice patinas! The one on your 14 is really cool, almost looks like stone or something. I just grabbed a 10 myself. Welcome to the forum, we'll see how long it takes for you to pick up something else. You've got your bases covered pretty well with your pair, but... Potato chips. Can't just have one or two.

Thanks for the heads up on the user group thing. I missed that little detail and was wondering why it didn't show up. The 14 came out better than I would have imagined, thanks!

A fellow Texan! Welcome and nice work!!

Thanks! I've been through Boerne once and visited The Cave Without A Name. Breathtaking. I wish I would have tried some of the local BBQ.

Thanks Ethan! It's awesome to know that you are a part of this forum and the personal feedback just puts the icing on the cake. I hadn't planned on using tartar sauce on the 10 but when I opened the fridge it just spoke to me. You can tell the little bits of diced pickle made their mark. One friend said it almost looks like camo.

Thanks! I couldn't believe how cool the 14 came out, almost like marble. It won't be long until I have a 16, 5, 9...
