Hello all. I am a new member here in the Midwest and have carried/used knives my entire life. They rotate but the CRKT Apache II is in the pocket most of the time. I look forward to reading and discussing topics with you in the future.

I have a quandry perhaps some of you more "in the know" could help me with. So months ago I ran across the web site of a knifer maker with some unusual designs. Most interesting to me was a very small blade for deep concealment, possibly as a neck knife. The blade was perhaps 2 inches long and was ground so that the cutting edge ran at nearly a 45 deg angle with the grip. Most distinctive is that that was no grip in the true sence, merely an oblong hole large enough for the first two fingers. Unfortunately I have lost the bookmark and can't remember the maker. Does this design ring a bell with anyone? I am quite interested due to the fact that it is very difficult for me to carry a knife at work (healthcare) and near high magnetic fields (you can do the math). I feel naked without a cutter on my person. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
OneintheCroud

OneintheCroud, welcome to Bladeforums! :D

I bet I know what you were looking at -- the HideAway Knife! Very neat package, lots of options, including titanium, which would be particularly appropriate around those magnetic fields.

Thank you Esav, you nailed it!

I do like the idea of the non ferrous material, but am unfamilliar with it as a cuting instrument.

Does anyone here have experience with titanium baldes? Pros/cons? Also, andy experiences with the Hideway, in any configuation?

I don't believe anyone makes pure titanium blades, technically, only blades of titanium alloys. And these differ. Mission Knives makes some killer knives of titanium. I have the smallest and simplest, the MPU, a skeleton handle utility neck knife. I don't know how HideAway's titanium measures up to Mission's.

If you're looking for a fairly heavy-duty cutter, you might get by on S30V, which is after all the "latest & greatest" in the steel department :) It is pretty rust-resistant and the HideAway package is so compact, it's less of a magnetic problem than a traditional format would be.

I'm a proud Hideaway Owner!

First of all run a search and you will find threads about the Hideaway with comments from myself and many others.

But to answer your question specifically, I carry around my neck or sometimes on my keys an S30V Straight model.

It is awesome. It is so small and yet it can do so much. For me it's the Ultimate Neck Knife. The only way I could do better would be to get a better Hideaway. It's the only fixed blade I carry on my person. I like it that much.

Mine is showing some signs of wear but its purely cosmetic and it hasn't denegrated any faster than my other EDC items. I am constantly pimping the Hideaway on this forum because I think it's well worth the investment.

For me the best features are that #1. The knife conforms to Murphy's Law. There is nothing to break. It is very hard to drop it or hurt yourself with it. #2 It's very much under the radar. A lot of people don't recognize it for what it is. Even those who do just shrug and say "Neat" and go on. With its small size its probably legal too. Concealment and carry options are many and the sheathing kicks butt!

I use mine as a holdout and last ditch survival tool. I also use it any time I need to do repetitive cutting and still need my hands free. I will admit I don't do any super nasty/stupid work with it like scraping rust off of a battery terminal hehe.

Whether it's for self defense peeling apples cutting tape or pruning bonsai trees you will like it a lot. It's really quite brilliant and you have to own one to truly appreciate it.

If you're working around an MRI machine, you don't want any kind of ferrous material at all, because the fields are so strong that they can rip the knife off of you. I've read about a kid killed because they used the improper oxygen tank with him while he was getting an MRI. They were supposed to use aluminum, but they had him on a steel tank and when the MRI came on, the thing flew around the room and hit him, killing him.

I don't think I would want a razor-sharp piece of S30V flying around the room with me, but YMMV.

I'm showing my ignorance here a bit, but why wouldn't a basic velcro or leather pouch suffice? Is the field so strong it could pull you towards it if you were wearing say a metal watch or belt buckle?

Hello, and thank you all for you replies.

To answer some of your questions, yes, I am an MRI Tech and yes the magnetic fields can be very powerful. The most common field strength is 1.5 Tesla. I suppose it could pull you into the bore, thogh I doubt if of an adult male. Mor likely it would snap the neck chain/cord befor it would pull you in. The young boy quoted is a very rare instance, but can happen. Realize he was killed by tank as a missile and not pulled in himself. This is the greatest danger in a n MRI suite. It is up to the Technologist to screen for these things.

I will be opting for the titanium material and will be searching for posts on the Hideaway. I will be carrying for the very reasons you mentioned, DeadManWalking. I believe the Kydex/neck sheath will suffice. Any suggestions on blade configuration. I'l thinking standard, but an open to suggestions.

Thanks again all, you are very generous with your knowledge.

Hi One,

Thank you for your interest in my knife.

Hi DeadMan,

Thanks for your kind words.

I've been working on deployment options based on feedback received to date on my existing ones. Here are 2 of the 3 done. I just added these to my website yesterday.

For current and future HideAway owners, the cool thing is they don't require additional sheaths. You do need to know which eyelet size you have (TekLok-size eyelets or HideAway Bikini Sheath-size eyelets) to order the right model. My goal was to reduce cost and time associated with sheathing while giving better options.

The bigger goal, and why I'm so focused on deployment options instead of different blade models, is to make it easier and more practical to keep an edge with you. These options work with easier-to-obtain than the HideAway fixed-blade production knives as well.

Anyway Deadman, these new options are all on "I want one" http://www.hideawayknife.com/want.php at the very bottom. (I'll move them up into the sheathing section eventually) I have 4 left of the Belt-Wraps and 6 of the Ripp-Cords from my first very small production run. I don't want to do another run till I get feedback on this first batch, which should happen soon.

Oneinthecrowd,, I guess you missed it ,, I directed you to Frontsights' website on the other forum that you asked this question,,,,,,,

But now you have her 'live and direct'! ,, would not a good alternative to titanium be a talonite or stellite blade?? How about it FS ??

Hi bqf,

re: Talonite/Stellite vs Titanium

Talonite/Stellite keeps wicked sharp edge. Titanium doesn't seem to get nearly as sharp.

Talonite/Stellite is also very expensive. I'll need to be extra courageous when I place the order for the sheet with Chuck Bybee that Mick is going to grind.

Neither rusts.

The question is what's good enough. I've been cutting "3-4 pound" leather with my Titanium knife just fine. But lots of Stellite / Talonite addicts are around.

A friend of mine who is an x-ray tech told of helping with an MRI on a motorcycle accident. They were doing a head scan. The patient was unconcious. They stopped the scan when someone smelled burning flesh. It was the patient's arm... iron in the tatoo ink.

Thanks for the assist bgf. I am pretty sold on the titanium for my first Hideaway. As funds become available, I'll begin to salt my truf with them..hmm one for the car..Here, babe, let me snap this on your purse..gotta match my new belt buckle... :D

Don't thank me I'm just telling the truth about the product! This is one of those things you stare at and go "Damn why didn't I think of that!" :D

Another thing I think is great about the product is there's so many ways to use it because you have so many sheating options and they're all good. What I consider to be the best neck knife period someone else may use for a pocket knife, for instance.

I'll be darn tempted to get one of those I.D. badge holders if I ever have to start wearing one...

Gollnick, my mind was screaming "Urban Legend" when I heard that, so I looked it up, and it's not! Apparently they stopped using metal much (if at all) in tattoo inks about 20 years ago, so new tattoos should be just fine.

Learn something new every day, eh?

As far as the Hideaway knives, I think they're pretty darn cool, but I'm 99% sure that it would be considered a "knuckle knife" here in the Great White North, so I'll have to stick with something more mundane.

Edited to add on-topic portion of post. :D

Hi Fox, just fyi, maybe or not relevant, but HideAways always seem to make it through Canadian customs OK.
