Hi all,

I am a new member to Blade Forums, though I have lurked in the past. I thought it would be nice to get involved with some of these topics and learn more about the knife world. I consider myself an amateur who is great (not really) at pretending he is a master.

I live in Battle Creek, MI (transplant - was born and raised in the metro Detroit area). I currently work full-time as an Merchandise Manager for Michigan's largest independently owned hardware store and enjoy my job. I am also taking correspondence courses in order to finish my Bachelors degree (which is 20 years in the making). I don't think I will do much with the degree, just want it (and I like to learn).

I grew up around firearms and hunting and though I don't hunt much anymore, I do still like to go to the range and send some lead down range and hiking through the woods, I just can't seem to find the time to combine the two. Along with my interest in firearms, came an interest in knives. Though I don't own much in the way of knives, I do find custom made knives to be of interest (and only interest at this point as I have witnessed the prices of said knives....OUCH!)

With the knives I have handled in recent times, I seem to be pretty fond of Benchmade knives. My bias towards Benchmade is slight at best. I know that they are not the only knife maker in the world and that I have only handled one or two of their knives.

Anyways, now that I have rambled on and y'all are half asleep (if you even made it this far), I am happy to be part of this community and look forward to learning from the pros to adding my own two cents into conversations.

Rob, welcome to Bladeforums! I'm happy to hear you have a good job and will be able to buy lots of knives ... :p

Customs are great, but a lot of the production companies have regular relationships with fine custom makers. This makes the custom styles more available to us non-millionaires, and seems to raise the bar on the production companies regular work, as well.

Check out the Buck/Striders, Darrel Ralph's designs for Camillus's CUDA line, and the Crawford and Carson knives at CRKT -- for a start!

And get a Sebenza! :D

Welcome, there are some nice people here. Blade Fourms is a good place to hang out, learn and contribute! Look forward to your posts.

It is really nice to meet you!! This is a wonderful place to hang out and be with other knife nuts.

Howdy. People here are real nice, y'all.

Check out Spyderco... that's how I got started into serious knives last year.

Anyone working AND working to further his education is most welcome. I'm an old country boy & firmly believe that anyone that likes guns & knives can't be too bad .

Welcome again !

Uncle Alan

Your knife choice is sound but please try some customs as well, move a little away from production stuff and support some of the smaller quality makers, some of whome are on our very forum, as well as buying from big knife corporations too.

Wow! I really appreciate all the positive responses, y'all are great. My time is limited so I will sign off for now and hopefully have some time tomorrow to join in some interesting topics (maybe....should I?......could I?.......even dare to start my own topic.....the suspense....).

Take care,
Rob

Hi Rob, welcome to the Forum and enjoy your stay here. Benchmade makes some fine knives, for all tastes and budgets and I'm sure you're gonna find one that suits you.
I'm a user type myself, that's why I preffer Spyderco knives. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but functionality is in any Spyderco

I do own a Spyderco Ladybug. I had won it in a contest many years ago. My mother liked it quite a bit, so I bought her one (I didn't want to give up mine). The two Benchamde knives that I have handled are the Apparition, which wowed me from first site, the quickness of the blade and the overall quality of the tool were features that lead me my opinion regarding Benchmade, and the NRA Outdoors "Gaucho" Osborne Folder, which is not an assited opener like the Apparition, but still well built. I would not even consider buying the Apparition for everyday carry. The knife weighs 4.5 oz., though it may not sound like a lot, I have no use for that kind of weight on my hip on in my pocket during the course of a day. The NRA Outdoors was quite a bit lighter, but still fairly large for everyday use.

I have never been a fan of Spyderco's design, It just doesn't appeal to me. Does it mean I will never buy one? Nope! Functionality is far more an important factor for me when deciding to buy a knife. I do have a very open opinion regarding other brands, I would hate for anybody to think that I am 100% a "Benchmade Guy." I have a lot to learn (and hopefully enough time to learn it all) and I am looking forward to everybody's contribution (and hopefully everyone is looking forward to mine).
