Hi all,

My name is Kyle I just wanted to introduce myself and give a little background on my tiny collection. Although I am not really new to knives I am somewhat new to buying quality knives. I thought I would join this site since talking to my friends about recent purchases just elicits a "that knife cost how much??"

Anyways my first "real" knife was a Spyderco I believe it is called the R that apparently is somewhat rare. Unfortunately I beat the crap out if it over several years of use while working at McDonalds when I was younger. It is definitely my favorite knife I have ever owned and have thought many times about buying a new condition one from ebay just to have a pristine example, but they are hard to come by and expensive.

A few months ago I decided I wanted another Spyderco after buying my first one in 2005 or so. Well I did have a ladybug at one point but that's long gone. I did a lot of research and settled on a Spyderco Shaman. I carry it at work and it sees some light use..opening a box here and there and breaking down some fancy plastic bags that I build at my company.

I recently took a trip to Cabela's which was a mistake because I had been researching knives a lot. I had been eyeing the Benchmade 940-1 because it was sexy and light and my shaman just seems a bit heavy and bulky. I handled one at Cabela's and it was just too skinny for me to comfortably open and close without fear of the blade hitting my hand. I don't have huge hands but I wear a size large glove and there just wasn't enough handle for me. I then asked to see the Griptilian. The Griptilian to me felt great but the plastic handles were just cheap feeling and a little sharp. This prompted some more research and I was pretty set on the 550-1 with the G-10 handles that I hadn't noticed while at Cabela's.

I was pretty set on buying a 550-1 with the G-10 handles and sheeps foot blade with the "spydie hole" but then I stumbled upon the 551-1701 with the carbon fiber handles and couldn't resist. I have one on order and it will be here tomorrow. Here's to hoping it is as perfect as the shaman I ordered.

Oh and I also randomly bought a Victorinox ranger grip 79 because I was in Switzerland, so I bought a swiss knife lol. Below are attached pictures of said knives and soon to follow will be pictures of my new Griptilian that I am super excited for. Enjoy!

Welcome and congrats on the new purchase. You will be getting alot of those " how much did that cost" looks. I like getting those looks then ask how much did there shoes cost. Followed by there shoes against my knife. Welcome this is a great community with alot of knowledgeable and nice people.

Usually up hill first. Finding the one that fits and steel you like. The color and grip. Then that's not enough. Then all down hill, no brakes, fully loaded semi with all the knives you can buy.

Congrats on the collection.

I have one question for you. What website did you use to post the pictures from. You did a fantastic job and I want to be able to do the same thing!

Welcome.
If you stick around you will learn a lot. Don't be afraid to spend time in the dufferent sub forums. I spent a lot of time lurking in MTE, even before I was a member.

One word of caution: rarely you may come across an enabler of knife addiction. :D

Sorry. Another fat finger. Something about BFC disagrees with my phone.

I used imgur to host the pictures and then there is actually a link built in that you just copy and past to the body of the message as highlighted in this picture

Welcome! diablogt90, n thankz 4 sharing!
The collection is looking good.
And it probably mirrors the choice of many others.
Its likely that you will more than enjoy the forums here :-)

Really great collection.

I have a Spyderco Q, which was the little brother (I believe) of your R. As rare as my Q is, your R is even rarer.

Youre first Spydie shown looks just fine. not beat up at all still a fine specimen.

I have that one knife from my younger days as well that though I don't carry anymore I could never let it go unless it was to a son or daughter or grandchild someday.

let us know what you think of Benchmade product once you have it as compared to Spyderco. seems like you have a Spyderco preference and still want that Spydie opening hole in the BM.

Welcome Kyle.

If you go to the Spyderco section here and post a picture of that "R", there's a good chance Sal Glesser himself will welcome you. :)

Be careful with Cabella's, the mark up can be pretty rough.

Welcome. I don't think there's a direct equivalent of the "R" in Spyderco's current lineup. Once your Grip comes in, just wipe down the R real good and let her "retire" to a safe place. Take her out and carry her to a movie or dinner once in a while for "auld lang syne". I have a couple that live in the "retirement drawer" in my knife chest. I take 'em out once in a while and look at the scratches and rub marks and remember when...

Then go have some new adventures with your Grip. It's a great knife in all versions. My favorite is the 550-1. That's the one I carry now when I want a hole and an AXIS lock. But the basic Noryl/154CM is double-tough and an outstanding user. My sister beat one up regularly as a firefighter/EMT in Florida, then on a horse farm in Georgia. It only quit on her when it got stolen. It's probably still working well for whoever took it.

Post pics when you get the 1701. I always like looking at 'em even though I opted for the KW model in micarta & M390 (my 2nd favorite Grip).
