Okay, I've been a member for a week, but still learning the ropes.
Anyway, I made my very first Youtube video - "Small High Quality EDC Knives" - which should be posted tonight on Youtube. Did not know if I could post here as well. I gave a shout out to Bladeforums, at the end so you have to watch the whole 11 minutes. It is a veritable Damascus orgy! My Youtube Channel is Locutus D'Borg.
So, I'm retired military and USG (retired early due to full disability). While I have always liked knives and owned Gerbers and Bucks and some speciality knives, never really thought about them until I had the time to watch Youtube videos, and stumbled on my first knife video. Brother, was I hooked.
I bought my first "good" knife - a BM Mini-Barrage 585, which I love and still use. It is the black knife, for those who don't know Benchmade.
Then I watched some Damascus vids and jumped up to a William Henry B-12 TMW with mono bloc (integral) Ti bolster and frame, wave stainless and nickel Damascus with a ZDP-189 core, and 6,000 year old Mammoth bone scales. The knife is light as a feather (an ounce and change), and tough as nails. In the video, you almost see it float out of my hand.
After watching SoloKnifeReviews' superb video "Using Damascus" (wherein he cuts all sorts of stuff with his Damascus Sebenza), I plumped for the small Sebbie 21 with stainless Raindrop Damascus. The road to Damascus was beginning to get well-worn, and my epiphany was that even Damascus was meant for use.
So I returned to William Henry for the B-30 Range, which has a gorgeous copper, nickel, and steel Damascus with a VG-5 core (59-60 Rockwell). In my vid you can see the stunning play of colors, even purple, and the Damascus is textural, dimensional: you can really feel the layers. Bolsters are solid carved Sterling silver (stars and sun motif), and frame is pure nickel silver. Scales are Ironwood. This baby has heft, and is solid. Reminds me of the Sebenza. Zero blade play in any of my knives.
To wean myself off of Damascus before I overdosed, I switched directions and snapped up a Hinderer XM-18 3" slicer with stonewashed blade and finish. Replaced the scale with yellow. Old Yeller! Solid as a rock as smooth as buttah.
Couple of points: I buy 3" and less because of legal issues (I live in the D.C. metro area and am constantly crossing jurisdictions). And I use ALL my knives, even though it is light EDC, opening boxes, mail, etc. And lots of fondling.
Finally, thanks to Rycen, tech guru extraordinaire, for assisting with photos. I finally got it licked. The beta Photobucket images display info differently, at least to MacBooks.
PS: My video referenced above is finally posted on Youtube. It is really rough, but good for a few laughs. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1WYeKyw4zA&feature=youtu.be
