Good day to all, and thanks for letting me be part of the community.

I've had an affinity for all things sharp for many years due to my uncle Jim being a knife collector. He always gifted me neat and various blades for birthdays & Christmas and other various holidays when he would visit. I've always been a user of knives and not as much of a collector, but now it seems that has changed. My Uncle Jim passed away in December of 2022 and I'm the only one in the family who has any interest and knowledge of his collection. Therefore, I have been charged with what happens to this very extensive collection. I've just now only been able to box up the collection and get it into an air-conditioned storage facility. My next step is to begin cataloguing the collection which is going to be overwhelming considering the size. I'm not exactly sure how many but I'm estimating at least 1,000 knives. Once going through them, I'll pick & choose the ones that I will keep for my own. But I have no need or room to keep his entire collection, so at some point later this year I'll begin selling off his collection. I joined this forum in the hopes that it can be helped with some knife identification and a place to sell them. I've looked on some of the various facebook groups for buy/sell/trade for the various knife makers and see that as an option as well as Arizona Custom Knives & Ebay. I figured that since you had to pay a membership fee here to sell knives, that It would give me a little more security from scammers on FB. Am I right to assume this?

I have a microsoft access database that I'm utilizing to catalogue the collection. Any tips for my dauting journey ahead? Does anyone know of a company that would purchase the collection as a whole? I know to expect a discounted bulk purchase price, but one company I talked to spoke of a 50% discount & I don't see the justification in that.

Also, I did a quick search and found that my Uncle Jim was a member on here under the name "UglyJim". It appears that he joined the forum in 1999, but looks like he hasn't been active posting in quite a while. If any of you were his friends, I'd like to extend my thanks for your friendship to him. He was a kind, genius of a man, with an unreal knowledge and love for knives.

One thing you need to keep in mind here...there are unscrupulous sorts who troll this and other forums hoping to see exactly what you just posted. You have no idea what you have, and these people will contact you and attempt to buy potentially valuable stuff for pennies before you have a chance to figure out what happened. Don't sell anything or respond to offers before you get a handle on things.
Post good high resolution pictures of knives in groups to start. Somebody will probably be able to identify most of them.
Get a Gold membership and you will be able to discuss value also.

This is the exact reasoning behind making a database of what I have. As of right now, I'm nowhere near a place where I'd be able to start selling.

Well, first of all.... WELCOME!

People enjoy their knives for all kinds of reasons. I've been carrying pocket knives for about 60 years and have used them as tools at work, to hunt, to fish, the camp, when hiking... you get the idea. Mostly utility uses.

But there are also a couple of other large groups. Some folks here just really appreciate the good craftsmanship of selecting materials and executing fit and finish. I kind of have a toe in that group, too!

And there are plenty of collectors. They keep the high-end knife makers and manufacturers in business. And of course there is everything in between here and the membership.

In case you haven't tried it, Blade Forums maintains an extensive and very searchable archive of messages and information. Literally, there is probably not a larger depository of blade related information on the planet. Search away!

Look at the sub forums as well. The traditional knife sub forum is very active and they even have a great place to ask questions when you are stumped about the origin or the design of a traditional knife.

Welcome to the forum man!! Sorry to hear about your loss. Trust me when I tell you this is the best place to get help with your values, and probably the best place to sell being that people will actually appreciate what you have. This is a great place to gain knowledge , and to sell what you would like to!

Welcome, condolences on the loss of your uncle and good luck with your effort to catalog that many knives. As a practical matter, and for what it's worth, you may want to consider separate databases for fixed blade and folding knives, as folders typically have more features or characteristics (fields) than fixed blades. For example, you're likely to encounter different kinds of locking, opening and pivot mechanisms as well as different blade configurations, especially with traditional folders. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask what you need to know - the members of this forum have an enormous amount of cumulative knowledge.

welcome......look forward to your participation here.....

Bruce Voyles is a knife auctioneer with a good reputation. He writes for Knife magazine and seems to be a decent sort. He buys collections from estates as well.
