Hi folks,
I'm hoping to make a combination thread here covering a few related topics.
First off is a bit of an introduction and quick background info about myself. My username is Seabring and I'm 33 years old. I come from 10 plus years of working in the commercial fishing industry and I now currently work in the oil fields of Alberta , Canada. In both these industries a good blade is kept close at hand and used regularly. I have allways appreciated a quality knife but never given much more than a cursory thought to the development and research that goes into designing and manufacturing them, until now!
Having just broken another knife (leatherman Skeletool) I started to look more closely at the demands I was putting on the tool and the options available for a more substantial and application suitable replacement. The Skeletool was a Xmas gift from my girlfriend so for the sake of relationship longevity I will be trying to get it repaired before she notices!
I have ordered a Benchmade 275 BKSN Adamas folding knife as a replacement for the Skeletool. Honestly the Skeletool was way outside it's intended use range with what I was doing with it and I wasn't surprised it broke. So I've gone to the other end of the spectrum and ordered the most hard use suited knife I could come up with through my research on this forum and on the internet.
During the course of my working day I use a knife for all kinds of things and it gets used to the full limit of it's intended design capabilities and more every day in all conditions. Dirt, sand, water, oil , and extreme cold temps in winter are the most common elements that the tools I use are exposed to on a daily basis. I allways carry my knife in my side pocket and it gets constantly banged and crashed into things as I move around doing my work. It gets thrown on the ground if I'm using it when I'm lying under a piece of equipment performing maintenance and repairs, it gets dropped to the ground from reasonable heights on occasions by accident. Basically the tools I use get the crap kicked out of them on a daily basis.
From what I can see the Adamas should be well suited to what I need!
I'm hoping to have the knife this coming week sometime. I ordered it from a supplier in the city of Edmonton and that's only a few hundred miles from my town so it should get here fairly quickly after it's shipped from the supplier. I want to do an initially review of the knife when I receive it and then I thought it would be of interest to this section of the forum if I do an ongoing review of how the knife performs in the field with daily use and abuse. Pics and detailed description of what I put it too would show how it copes with, and holds up to, daily use in the field.
Any thoughts or ideas from forum members are much appreciated and I look forward to hopefully providing an interesting and ongoing knife review for the forum to enjoy.

Sounds like you may have been doing some prying with the Skeletool with it's fairly thin blade (0.1")?

The Adamas is certainly tough enough but you may want a knife that doesn't have the spring mechanism where you could have buildup. If something smaller like Skeletool perhaps a Benchmade 755 MPR which has a titanium framelock. The blade steel on MPR is the tough, corrosion and wear resistant M390. Blade is 2.9" long compared to 2.6" on Skeletool and a robust 0.165" thick.

Yes , was prying and scraping when the blade snapped. I have never really paid any attention to lock mechanisms until your post there about the frame lock. That is a good idea to stay with that frame style of blade lock. I will look further into the 755 MPR and keep it in mind for what I could need. Thank you for the suggestion.

Just had a look at the 755 , that's a sweet looking knife, I will definitely be keeping that in mind !

My Adamas arrived in the post today!
First impressions are: excellent quality, nice sharpness on the blade edge, smooth opening/closing action, sits nice and snug in the right front pocket of my work pants, solid and rugged construction should hold up to the demands of a daily hard use knife!
Overall I'm extremely happy with the Adamas and I can't wait to get to using it!!
Ps, I don't know how to put pics in the post , can anyone tell me how I do that?

Congrats on the knife. Easiest way is to use photobucket or a similar service. You take the pics, upload them to photobucket and then post the links into the thread.

I bought a mini-Griptilian for my wife. She has used that thing for everything in the garden, from trimming, and harvesting tomatoes and squash and such, to digging in dirt and potting soil to extract and/or cut roots for transplanting flowers or herbs. The lock mechanism has never failed, and I have seen that thing so dirty the yellow handle scales barely showed yellow anymore. OK, that might be a slight exaggeration, but not by much. I've taken it completely apart twice to detail clean it, not because it wasn't working, nut just because I felt sorry for the little thing. It is a trooper, and that lock mechanism is remarkable, IMO. I don't think you'll have any issues with the Adamas lock. That is not to say that the 755 might not be better suited to the work, but I wouldn't worry about the Adamas.

Today was first day at work with the new Adamas. Carries nice in the right front pocket of my work jeans, an advantage to the size of the knife is that it is easier to get a hold on when going through the side pocket of my coveralls to get the knife out of the pocket of my jeans. Played with the knife for a while today opening and closing it, smooth and consistent every time. Looking forward to getting to put it to some serious work soon.

Congratulations on your new Adamas. Looking forward to your ongoing review...and pics of the Adamas in action!
