Hello!

This is obviously my first post here. I found this forum while looking for information on knife making. Several of the threads and posts have been profoundly helpful so I decided I should join as I will inevitably have questions. This seems like an excellent resource.

I'm in the process of making my first knife from 1095 bar stock. I've built a filing jig (I do not have a good belt sander yet) and a centerline scribe. I'll need to work on building my forge here very soon as I believe I am about ready to normalize and harden the blade. I've started gathering supplies for said forge. I will probably be asking for guidance on that and following other people's posts on the subject. I'm looking for this to be a relaxing hobby. I appreciate the aesthetics and attention to detail involved with this endeavor.

Anyhow this is what I've done so far. The knife is about 8" overall with a 4.25" blade. I'm using 1095 steel to start. I know I'll need to drill my holes for handles and do some other clean up before heat treating. I'm not 100% on how thick the edge of the blade should be prior to heat treat. I originally had about 1cm thickness at the edge but after sanding it to 220 grit, the edge is actually a bit sharp. I believe this is not a good thing at this stage. Any advice?

Thanks, I look forward to learning quite a bit here!

Hi and welcome, as Kevin has said, go to the shoptalk section and look at the stickies for lots of good information. As far as the edge before heat treat goes, a good rule of thumb is about the thickness of a dime. Run your sharp edge over a file or sandpaper to dull it a bit at this point. Good luck and keep at it!
