Hello all. New member here. I am returning to the world of martial arts after several years out due to a knee injury. I have a first degree black in jujitsu, a second degree in kenpo and a first degree in tae kwon do. I am starting to prep for my second degree test in TKD which is about 13 months from now. I have to develop an original weapon form for the test. I am going back to my favorite weapon - the knife. In general, I refuse to teach any weapon that is not a knife and a staff (short or long) because they are the only practical martial arts weapon left.

OK, long intro. I am debating between balisong or karambit. I wanted to check on the legality of these in my state. First, are they legal. Second, is there a blade length laws in NH. My favorite karambit has a 6" blade - it is a pretty hefty tool.

Thanks!

Aaron

Now that we got the details out the way, Welcome to Bladeforums, Aaron!

You might want to check out our Practical Tactical forum for more discussion about the relative merits of balisong and kerambit.

(Kerambit all the way. Balisongs are flashy, but you want something that opens quickly and securely, not a toy that you need to spin around.)

Thank you!

Yes, good ole' NH. I figured that it would be the case. "Live free AND die"

I would agree with you on the actuall practicality of the balsilong vs the karambit but I like them each for different reasons. The karambit has the advantage of being a nasty down and dirty cut them to ribbons knife but in the few times I have had to weild my jaguar people usally turn tail and run the moment they see a butterfly in the hands of someone who can use it.

Welcome. I am looking to buy a place in NH as the love the state's freedom! I am also a second degree TKD Black Belt, but that was from years ago. Sounds like you are really into various forms and training! If NH was a bit warmer I would be there already!

NH is more than just knife-friendly. It is, without a doubt, one of the most weapons-friendly states in the union. I live right on the border with NH, so I spend a lot of time there. As a martial artist, you may purchase nunchakus, bo's, sais, swords, tonfas and other traditional weapons without fear of arrest/prosecution. I purchased an 8 oz. flat sap, which is a felony to carry in my state, in NH. I just keep it at home, between the mattress and box spring, as an additional aid to peaceful dreams. Anyhow, welcome to Bladeforums. You will find a wealth of information here and plenty of friendly banter among forum members.

Yes, I actually have not been studying TKD for all that long. I usually study the chinese arts. My favorite was a style of kung fu called Je-Chi but no one knows what that is so I call it kenpo since they are similar styles. I also studied Parker Kenpo.
NH is a great place to live but the property taxes will get ya. That is the one catch to this state ... oh yeah ... and the weather.

The property taxes in NY and Long Island are really bad. The taxes I have seen on houses near and on lakes are very low in NH compared to what I pay for a small cape on Long Island. My Cape and 1 1/2 car garage on 100'x60' lot = school and property taxes of $8,500 per year! Every thing I have seen in NH on 2 to 4 acres is around $5,000.

Oh geez! Yeah man, they are not that bad. A lot of people in this area will hop right over the border to maine to save on property taxes ... but then you have to deal with income taxes
