new guy chiming in here. found link for this forum while researching Emerson knives. Great forum, lots of info on here. I have a few folders but my current edc is an older spyderco. I purchased it around 1994-1995 and from doing some research it looks like a Hunter. I'll get a pic posted on here and see what you guys can tell me. Also it needs a sharpenig in the worse way. Never been sharpened since I bought it :o. I emailed Spyderco about sending it to them for sharpening. ANy thoughts on this? It's partially serrated or I'd do it myself.

Welcome,
The Spyderco sharpmaker will get you razor edges, even serrated ones, with a minimal amount of technique required. Definitely works on serrated edges.
DMT has a pretty good and affordable setup, too.
Lansky works and is even cheaper... not quite as nice.
Depends on how much $$$ you're willing to spend.

If you send it in, you will get back a knife that has an edge like new, and you won't believe how sharp your good ol' Spydie will be. After ~16 years without any service, this is the way to go, and the $5 that Spyderco may (or may not) charge you for shipping it back are well spent. (Downside is that it can take 1-3 weeks dependig on the workload of the resharpeners @ Spyderco.)

After that, I too would recommend a Spyderco Sharpmaker for keeping it sharp by light and fast touch-ups from time to time. You will be able to keep it close to "factory-sharpness" after you practiced a little with an old beater or kitchen knife (which will be scary sharp after that, too!)

If it hasn't been sharpened in that long, it will take some time to bring in back on the sharpmaker.

I'd agree with the others and say send it back for sharpening, or even better, find one of the pros on here to put a scary sharp edge on it!!

Here is the promised pic. I will be sending it off to Spyderco for sharpening soon.

Going 16 years without sharpening is pretty amazing. Has the knife been in service the entire time? If so, that has to be some kind of record. Good stuff, thanks for sharing!

Hi Greenenvy,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Quite an old piece. thanx for the trip down memory lane. That is an old "Hunter" model. The current "evolution" of that model is the Stretch. (After many refinements and models).
