New member to Bladeforums. I hope to learn from the assembled experience and knowledge on this forum.

I've always loved Balisongs, ever since I found one in a California schoolyard in the early 1960's. But I've purchased only a few mediocre ones, and beyond THE BALISONG MANUAL, I don't know too much more.

QUESTION: I'd like to find a very nice, high-quality, traditional-looking Balisong with a wooden handle. I don't know too much about how to proceed. Any guidance would be welcome, THANKS!

what ever you want to know, this is probably the right place to look. there are a lot of guys here with lots of information on about everything you can imagine! i'm getting more impressed each day. :)
hope you enjoy your stay here.
welcome. :D

If your looking to practice and need a durable one, look at a Benchmade model 42, 43, or a 47 depending on what blade style you like. These will be able to take the punishment of constant use. I recommend the 43 IMO;). You can find them on www.benchmade.com

Thanks for the welcome! Actually, I landed on those sites you mentioned. I sent a purchase inquiry off to balisong.com. I know that there are held to be better knives of this type, in terms of mechanics and materials. But what is imprinted on me is the first ones I saw on the West Coast decades ago - bone or wooden handles, carbon steel blade, brass trimmings, etc.

By the way, what are the best Balisongs made? Custom from a private maker?

Many flame wars have been started with this simple question. You need to quantify "best" a little bit.

Best bang for the bucks for a bali I would use everyday? The old Pacific Cutlery and/or Benchmade Custom Bali's. Although the new crop of sandwich construction bali's, like the Tachyon, and new bali features, like latchgates, has me rethinking that summation.

If it helps you any, and I doubt it will, I've been collecting and using bali's for over 20 years and I'm still looking.

Oh man............. now you've done it.

I almost believed that you were just a new guy in here, looking for some info. But now I see you're just here to crank everyone up.

Ha!............. what are the best Balisongs made?

Welcome to Balisong island Greg. Enjoy your stay.

............trouble maker.

I'm from NY too..less then an hour from manhattan. On Long Island.

If you want to get into serious manipulation Tony is right. All of the current benchmade models are high quality knifes. The Tachyon is a bit pricey for me though. $120 for a benchmade balisong goes a long way. Don't forget to pick up one of Clay's Xtreme Kydex sheaths as well. Check out www.balisongxtreme.com for all your tricks and the sheaths. Oh and by the way welcome and enjoy!;)

Thanks for the Welcome. Clay, your website is awesome and very helpful. Curiously, many of the finger exercises and twirls are the same ones used in twirling drumsticks in Drum Corps and pens like in Hong Kong.

OK, no more "best" questions, really!:)

Uh oh, a peckerhead. :D:D Welcome to the forum, and the aforementioned crack was from a former tuba player, though not one from a drum and bugle corps. :D:D Interestingly enough, my section leader in high school played for the Phantom Regiment for a couple years, 1995, 1996, and I think 1997.

Seriously, welcome, and enjoy your stay at the Institute for the Bali-Flipping Insane. :D:D

The best Balisong made is the one you have in your hand when you need it. That means lots of things to many different folks. You've got some good advice from all these guys who are very knowledgeable. The only problem you will have hanging out with us.., is that you will buy so many swingers you won't know which is best ~~> none of us do.., so we just get 'em all. :)

Pete, now I understand what happened. It is your guys fault. Six months ago I was only addicted to auto's. Since hanging out here, I have ten bali's in six months. And I thought auto's were addicting. All I can think about now is Mayo Bali, Mayo Bali, Mayo Bali.

Sure, go ahead and blame your lack of self-control on us. I mean it's not like you go out and buy 10 bali's a month or something....

Oops, never mind!!!!:D Something about "people living in glass houses" just popped into my head....

Hey Hawaiian, do you want to get back at these guys for getting you addicted?? I have the perfect plan..........

Ken Onion is out there with you on the Islands........... talk him into making a Balisong. Then they'll have to spend even more $$$ trying to acquire those. Oh wait, then you would too.......

Or maybe we could get Mr. Mayo and Mr. Onion to collaborate on a Balisong............. yeah, that's it.

We could call it:

Butterfly with Onion and Mayo.:p

AaaaaaaaaaHahahahaha............

Sorry, the holidays are getting to me! All my Balisong money going to buy stuff for other people is more than I can take.
