So, I put up my first post about two months ago, in reference to SOG's changed product line. I used to be a fan of their stuff; still have a Twitch XL that I have used forever, but HATE their new stuff! Anyways, I was called a "troll", and was accused of "trolling". I confess my ignorance- can somebody tell me what "trolling" is? All I did was criticize a knife company's direction in recent years, their new product line (SOGzilla in particular), and pointed out one alternate product that I thought might still be worth buying, based upon my POU experience.

For the record, I'm not a company rep. or some other ridiculous assertion; I'm just ex-Navy, (submarines and a short Spec. War stint,) and a cop-in-training. I understand some companies are hallowed ground to some people; why not engage in reasonable discourse? And what is "trolling"???

trolling is basically bashing someone or something for whatever reason. This is usually done to create arguments and bickering between people who somewhat agree with the "troll" and those who defend the person or thing the "troll" brought up. Usually trolls are those that register to a forum just to start this types of fights because they have an unusual hatred for the product or thing they brought up. What you did would probably been fine if your were a well known member here on the forums. Personally, I agree with what you had said, but many here are fans of SOG, and they have their own reasons for being so.

Anyways, welcome back :P

Also, when a topic is brought up that has been hashed, and re-hashed in numerous threads, after a while any new thread bringing up the same issue is suspect. This is patently unfair to new members, such as yourself, who don't know that the argument has already been raging. Glad you didn't let it keep you away.

Ahh... thanks for the info., guys. Much appreciated.

Boy, people here sure do get spun-up about this stuff! I'd only asserted that maybe SOG's made a serious wrong turn, but that I personally like this one, slightly older knife they make. As a juxtaposition, I think the funniest bit is that someone accused me of being an SOG rep./consultant/other such nonsense. Christ, I wish I was; I'd probably make a fair bit more money than I do now! Ha! Probably get a whole bunch of free stuff, too. Oh well.

Apparently, Kershaw is marketing new $40.00 and under knives through Walmart now, and with good Sandvik steels (13C26N, 14C 28N, et. al.). I guess I'll comment on them, maybe start a thread; I'm sure somebody will get pissed off at that too! So much for trying to reasonably and thoughtfully review/share a knife! Hahahaha!!!

Anyways, thanks for the info. contributions, all.

seanv1 its good that you came back in. 1st thing is just because people jump on you , take it with a grain of salt. always feel free to state your preferances & opinions otherwise what is the use of a forum. just about any strong statement will draw some likes & dislikes. many times a pack jumped on myself & as always i replied i did'nt join to win popularity contests. anyway by the next week or so we were all getting along fine. many members may not agree with you but they are gracious enough to let you say your piece.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

It doesn't sound like you were really trolling, but I don't know where the original thread is to read it. There is a hateful predisposition around these forums against certain companies, so you have to just ignore some of that. For example, CRKT doesn't get much love at all, but the new Ripple is awesome, simply awesome.

There was one long thread about the Sogzilla and other new designs that had pretty much degenerated into arguments.
I posted another thread about the Sogzilla and got "jumped" a little...basically asking me if I didn't know how to read and linking the other thread. My simple replay was that I had 2 specific questions and didn't want them buried in a 6+page argument thread. That ended the negative replies and I fianlly got an answer to at least one of my questions.

I think you just posted at the wrong time. The subject was fairly heated and folks were getting a bit testy.

The origin of the term trolling is from fishing....tossing a line and hopeing something bites. But I usually get a mental picture of the fairy tale characters who live under bridges :).
In the case of forums its become a general negative term for someone who appears to be posting for the sole purpose of getting a reaction with no real interest in providing or receiving information.
