Just thought I'd say "hi" for my first post. I've been sitting here for about 4 hours now pouring over all the info on this site., it's awesome. I'd like to say thinks already to all the folks that post all the useful and entertaining stuff on here!

So where does a begining knife collector start? I've always been into knives and have a few pocket and fixed blade knives and even a couple swords, nothing special though. Tomorrow I'm ordering a Boker Rampage and a Kershaw JYD 2 composite but just thought I'd see what you guys thought were some good knives (preferably no more than $100, yet! although I've been eyeing people picks of the Busse's pretty hard!) to own/use/or just collect. I'm more into usuable knives though.., not much for the too expensive to use knives. Appreciate any info or advice!

If you look hard enough you can get custom knives for fairly cheap.
The maker's section on this site and the exchange are good places to start.

I don't think collecting is the right word for owning a drawer full of mass produced knives.

Welcome to BF, I move around a lot, cause I like old production and customs, old customs too. Traditional knives is a cool place to hang, they will treat you right, Lots of great guys all over the forum with a wealth of information.

Welcome! I am fairly new myself, but have found a lot of good stuff. Look over the many sections thouroughly - lots of pictures for ideas. I have already bought a used Boker folder, a small fixed custom and RAT RC-4 either from people on the site or because of recommendations. Just hope your wallet is fat! ;)

my wallet is never fat enough!! haha. How do you like the RC-4? Might get one in the future as long as the fiance does shoot me for spending that much on a knife.., she just doesn't get it.

If you're looking for good "using" knives at a good price, check out the designs of Chad Los Banos, as made by Boker, and Chad's Spyderco Lava.

The Boker models of his designs are some of the best bargains out there. Besides chad's Spyderco design, check out Spyderco knives in general. If the prices are a bit too much for you, Spyderco's Byrd line of folders are great too; at a lower price point. Check out the links below:

The RC-4 is a LOT of knife for the money. Mine was just over $100 with shipping. It will be my primary "outdoors" knife.

Check out the RC-4 threads in the Wilderness and RAT Cutlery sections.

Welcome to BF. When I moved out of the "one or two knives for general use" category and into the "more serious acquirer" category, I had to decide what it was that attracted me to a particular knife. From there, I built a list of criteria for knives that interest me and those are the only ones that I buy. That helps narrow the field some and makes the hobby expensive, but possible.

Enjoy your collection and collecting. I think that the chase is as much fun as the acquiring.

I've been looking at the RC-4 myself. That and the Spyderco Aqua Salt are on my short list.

No knife is too expensive to use if you want to use it badly enough.

As for acquiring knives, some people do it by type, brand, or some combination of both. Others have specific uses in mind. For instance, some folks just want a range of knives for different applications.

I think you'll simply have to find a niche with which you're comfortable.

thanks for all the good info guys! Going to start saving $$$ and doing some research into purchasing my first custom, can't wait!
