Hello,

I'm not new to knives by any stretch of the imagination, but I've been raised in such a way that a pretty knife means nothing unless its tough enough and sharp enough to get work done. So I've been on a quest for a new pocket knife. I like the stockman and trapper lines of knives. I have looked extensively into "Boker" and "Case" but found that Boker doesn't offer the old steel that is found in my grandfathers old knife and Case has been having QC issues. I would like a few suggestions after you take a quick look at some of my requirements.

-Carbon Steel Blades.....(Not high carbon ss.....I want it to develop a patina and hold an edge due to the carbon content)
-Lighter than a full size "Case Trapper".
-2 or 3 blades
-I dont like lock backs...just the regular old back springs....(as you can tell I prefer the older style ;) )
-Handle materials isnt a big deal but I prefer bone.
-German or US made

Thanks and please be sure to post your reccomendation! Its greatly appreciated!!

Welcome! Since you have more of a traditional taste in knives, the folks in the Traditional Forum will be able to give you many thorough answers and advice. Not all, but most in General enjoy more modern knives. Bounce around a bit this is a nice place to hang.

Better yet, click the <report post> icon (lower left of your opening post, triangle with an exclamation point in it.) In the pop-up, ask for a super mod to move this thread to Traditional. We'll be happy to talk your ear off about traditional knives.

Check out Great Eastern Cutlery

Yep, GEC is pretty much "the toast of the town" outside of full custom. You can find good prices on the for sale section of the forum as well.

The #73 is a workhorse, I prefer the single blade model, but these thisgs are built to work, they patina in a hurry and hold a dang good edge.

#54 Big Jack but it may be harder to find one of these?

Boker still makes carbon bladed knives. The new ones are a bit cheaper in price. Case has stepped it up in their fit and finish department. Case makes the mini trapper but its more of a gentlemans knife at 3 1/2 inches closed. Try a full size case trapper in yellow cv. Bc the newer ones are A LOT less bulkier than the older ones. I have both; boker and case trappers. Case is more robust where as boker is more stream line and not as heavy. Can't go wrong with either.

Howdy,
Guess I was too late responding to your thread in General.

Great Eastern Cutlery, better known around here as GEC, makes traditional designs with traditional materials. That would include 1095 carbon steel blades. Very well built. Nice blade profiles.

Take a look around the Traditional Forum. You often see half a dozen threads on GECs on the first page alone.

Welcome to BladeForums!

Boker still offers some knives made in carbon steel. They will be of German origin, so if it is made in China it's not carbon steel. GEC offers most of their knives in 1095 or O1 and they are made to last. Queen also makes knives in 1095 under their Queen City brand along with the Schatt & Morgan Heritage Series knives. Both of those companies make all of their knives in the US.

Vintage knives can also be found in great shape for a decent price. US made Schrade and Camillus knives are a favorite of many here and are still fairly easy to find on the secondary market.

Boker's carbon is great, and I'm impressed with their knives that are of German origin, and even some their outsourced stuff. Still as others have stated GEC offers a superb product for more money, it's worth the expenditure AFAIC. Case is still good IMHO, and given their price range offer solid stuff.

I like the #56 Dogleg Jack in particular, but I'm a sucker for jackknives.

The echo you hear in the room, GEC, is earned by their solid line up of knives, I'll back that echo up as well, solid knives all.

My recommendation, the Montana Workhorse, a very solid 3 bladed knife, check them out here at a couple of BladeForums dealers

Knives Ship Free

Old Hundred Collectibles

a few others also sell GEC's, but, there are many, MANY designs to look over on both sites.

And they DO take a great edge, very keen knives, there are on going arguments over how sharp they are on arrival but as most things, you make it your own, set your own bevels as you see fit and go from there, it's been said, 'it ain't rocket science' ;)

Good luck in your search! I like that model so much, I have a micarta scaled version and just picked up one with stag scales...

I already have the full size trapper and its only 4 or 5 yrs old. It's heavier than the dickens!!! It makes the right sides of my pants sag.

I don't like GEC's designs tbh. Or the price for that matter. I'm sure it's well worth it, but I don't have that kinda money to drop on a pocket knife.

If you really don't like GEC, find yourself a Boker stockman or Case medium stockman. Might also look a Case Slimline Trappers.

GECs are well worth their price. Save your lunch money. You might also consider looking for a used one on the Exchange.

Check into queen knives. USA made and D2 blades. Also kabar is making some good ones in D2. Or look in the exchange and get some old like new classics.

Ah, not liking the GEC so much, ok, there are some Boker's with carbon blades on this BladeForums dealer site

Collector Knives.net not a lot but some, currently has a stockman for under $50, that might be of more interest to you.

Best of luck!

Honestly, I'd look at a GEC boys knife, pony jack, or 66 serp jack. In Case I'd look at the Texas jack, small and medium stockmans, or medium jack. Any of those are pretty nice.
