greetings from the philippines!!

i am a new member but have always been intrigued with knives ever since i could remember and can't even remember anymore how many balisongs i have had
ever since..

i have a modest collection of both local and imported knives including some balisongs and locally made bolos and hunting knives and cane swords...i also have imported production knives from kabar, gerber, cold steel, buck, western cutlery, leatherman, swiss army, glock, including some bayonets for US military rifles...no imported custom knives as yet as they are way above my budget..

i normally like to use my knives although many of my imported knives are still NIB...

i have always tried to buy only authentic knives but lately have been tempted to try some of the "made in china" knives although my untrained eye oftentimes cannot tell the difference between them and the originals...they are flooding the market here at very low prices..

my questions:

...what are the production US branded knives that currently have their knives(some models if not all) manufactured in china?
...are these china made knives really inferior to those made in the US??...
...what is best way to know if the knife is genuine or not?

many thanks for any replies or comments....thank you for reading this..

Your probably seeing knock-off's there has been a lot of those hitting the market lately, sad but true.

Very few quality knives are made in china but their are some decent ones, what ones were you looking at?

most of the brands are represented...i was looking for some automatics and they had some smith&wessons that really looked gud...also benchmade, cold steel, spyderco, buck, gerber.etc...really a lot of choices!! and the prices were only from $10-$20@.....too good to be true...i may just get one(or two....or even three!) and post the pics here for everyone to see....

Spyderco and A G Russell are two of the high end US cutlery companies having knives made in China. I haven't handled any of their China products, but they are reported to be excellent quality for the $ (assuming you get a real one and not a K/O).

Quite a few US companies will have some of their knives made in China, but A G Russell and Spyderco keep very tight QC oversight on their overseas products, so I'd have a lot of confidence in their China made products.

The Benchmade Vex is made in China, with the same materials as the Spyderco Tenacious. I believe some Buck knives are now produced their too.

A lot of major brand auto parts are now Made in China, and very few buyers have had negative experiences with them beyond the printing on the label. China can and does put out high quality parts to OEM and better standards - it's the importers specifying junk, and the impulse market of care less consumers who create the demand.

If the price looks to good to be true, it is. There may be some gems in the offering, but much of the inexpensive stuff is just that. Buy one good quality knife and learn how it handles, the smoothness of the opertation, and the cheap stuff will stand out like lumps of clay.

Of the knives listed as being available, be careful - the prices are twice what I've seen available on the interweb. That should be another indicator of the quality.

I think the entire Benchmade Red Class is made in China. All of Spyderco's Byrd line is made in China. Byrd is a separate company but owned by Spyderco or their umbrella company.

Keep it up Dennis. You'll get the hang of it in no time. I commend you for learning how to use a computer:thumbup:. Many community colleges provide introductory courses for using computers and the internet. You may want to look into those. Just ask a friend or your nephew to look for local programs for you. Often they are very cheap classes or even free.

jmvargas, just noticed that you're in the Philippines:thumbup:. Nice to see more Filipinos around here. I'm American by culture, Filipino by blood and happy to be both.
