I know I can't post things for sale as a non gold user, (I just went through the whole faq and rules) but if I have no idea what kind of knife I purchased, can I post asking what it is? Without having any monetary questions about it? I would even put "not looking for value" in the post. I wanted to ask before over stepping the rules.

Yes, you can ask about information about a knife.

General Knife Discussion might be a decent place for newer knives.
If you know the brand (like Benchmade or Spyderco) but not the model, check in the Manufactures section first to see if they have a forum here. That'd be a good place to identify brand specific knives.

Honestly, I would leave out a statement like "not looking for value", just to be on the safe side. Just ask for identification and or history of a particular knife and you should be good.
