Hi Guys,
im a new member to these forums and i wanted to say hi.
i joined because i am in love with my CRKT M16-12 (dont worry, its a AUS8 model)
from reading a lot of posts here, i know that my knife is not the best utility folder of them all. but i wanted your opinions on what is very similar but more rugged.
any thoughts?

Richard

(oh and if my spelling is a bit poor its because my right hand is in a splint because its broken :)
(dammit, i meant to post this in general discussion, sorry. can a mod move this please)

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

This is a great site with great people, loaded with tons of blade knowledge. You should get all your questions answered by one, usually more, a lot more, of the intelligent and helpful members. Welcome aboard.

I'd look into a CUDA or an Emerson for a rugged utility folder, comprable to a CRKT, they are probly a little more$, but for the Emerson (watch out for quality control, if you get a blemished one they'll make it right, no questions asked) if you get a good one (99.9% are, but a few slip through the quality control cracks) it will be well worth the extra $50 IMHO, esp if your looking for rugged, Emerson makes some pretty rugged folders.

Hi SuroK, welcome to the forums:). Maybe you can give us a little more info, since there are for the most part so many options. What specifically, do you like about the M-16? The flipper, or can you do without it? The size?, the handle material? The lock? What might you want to see in a more "rugged" knife? Longer edge retention?

I'm one of the people, who generally stays away from CRKT, but it is a pretty good option for the price range they sell at. So don't think you have a crappy knife.

Welcome to the forums!

As for a tough heavy duty folder, take a look at Kershaw's ZT 300 series...

G'day mate, have friends in Adelaide, Australia. Welcome to BladeForums,
Hope you get all your answers.

Welcome to BF.... Great place to hang out and learn. Don't get caught up in the threads where people say certain knives are junk. In some cases they are junk and it is good to know ahead of time, in other cases it is just personal opinions... It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest to be a good knife.

I agree with ChuckBuck, Emerson is the way to go for overall toughness and ruggedness. Here's some photos of a few of my favorite Emerson folders:

Welcome to the forums. Just so you know, getting started in the knife world doesn't have to be expensive. I'd never buy a Sebenza as my first or second knife, for fear of damaging or ruining it.

A more "rugged" knife in terms of edge retention would be a Spyderco Endura. Fifty dollars.
In terms of taking an edge, I'd opt for a Buck 110 ($30) or Kershaw Leek ($45).
In terms of taking abuse, a Spyderco Manix ($100).
In any of these terms, a Benchmade Griptilian ($65).

I'm very partial to the Griptilian, but look around in the Knife Reviews and Testing forum here, and you'll see some very good write-ups.

i LOVE the carson flipper, but it looks like the emerson has a wave addition to the blade.
i was wanting a sharper edge that i can sharpen. as i have NFI how to sharpen those serrations . i was looking at the sebenza but i would really ideally have a spectra/rainbow sebenza.. i was looking at the Emerson CQC7B SF w/ Wave or the Emerson HD7 BT Plain Edge

Welcome to the site. You have a good knife there and there are MANY good folders in production for well under 100.00. Watch out for just buying the NAME. Kershaw Makes good folders at a good price. Many of the CS, Spyderco and Buck folders are great choices. For fixed Blades, I like SOG and Knives of Alaska about the best. Ontario might build some of the toughest knives around for the price. I have many Ontario fixed blades in the Spec Plus series that have been beat up bad but always come back for more.

welcome to the forums Surok. there are thousands if not millions of people on here and they all have their opinions about which knives are the best. dont be discouraged about your knife just because of what some people on here say about it. i have been using knives for about 30 yrs now and have had many different brands. the crkt's are among the best in the price range us mere mortals can afford. i have several crkt's in aus8 and some newer ones in aus4 and i cant tell a big difference in either steel. doesnt matter much anyway if you use them because all knives, sooner or later, have to be sharpened.,,again, welcome to the forums!,,,VWB.

at least i think mine is an AUS8 model.. its brand new about 1 month ago. and CRKT tells me its AUS8 lindsey phelps said so..

If you stick with New Graham, you won't be disappointed, whatever you choose. Mary Beth and Annie are the bomb!
