I have a very nice American made COUNCIL TOOL Wood Craft Pack Axe with a nominal 19" handle. This little "hatchet" can also pound a steel stake without mushrooming the poll because Council Took took the time to temper the poll. This version now sells for $185. in the Boundary Waters Catalog. Well worth the money. Using it is a dream due to its deign and quality.

Also I own an old ESTWING blue synthetic handle full length axe. It's OK for chopping but its very thin blade is NOT good for splitting like my Wood Craft Pack Axe. I think Estwing was saving on the amount of steel it put into its axes with this thin blade design.
