My dad shot this in new Mexico today. 850 lbs, 6x6, 55 yard shot with a (EDIT: sorry it was a compound bow he usually uses a recurve, what a cheater) ran about 40 yards and dropped. His boss paid for them to go on a guided hunt (I need a job like that) and they watched this guy answer their calls and come in from hundreds of yards away.

Some of the best eating on the planet right there. Hope you get some of it.

In retrospect this may not be big for elk hunters but us Pennsylvania boys that hunt public land are used to whitetails that you can throw over your shoulder and carry back to your truck...

I think I will. My stepmom doesn't like "gamey" meat so I get most of the meat of the whitetails my dad gets every year. Elk burgers for everyone!

Looks pretty damn big to me. What amazing antlers.

I will be watching for your antler handled BK2. ;-)

I'm envious... It's public gamelands for me (in a part of the state where they're not all that plentiful). Awesome shot -- thanks for sharing!

Im in the same boat man. A woman was shot a few years back by an idiot with a 300 mag (for whitetail!) On a hill top. Forensics say the shot was taken from nearly a mile away and hit her center mass. She sued the land owner and won. Now everything is posted. Game lands are nothing but a sea of orange opening day. I have half a mind to shoot a fat mall ninja for meat for the year and mount his head over my imaginary fireplace mantle

Wow, that's awesome. Would like to try elk, never had it. Have had buffalo, and I love it. Beautiful place right there as well.

I'm surprised she survived! A 300 mag will kill a deer where it stands... I must confess that I use a 300 mag (well, WSM), as well. For one, I don't like to chase them (they literally fall over). The bigger reason is that I could only afford one nice hunting rifle, so I got something I could use on pretty much anything, anywhere I might have the opportunity to hunt. If I'm in North America and a 300 WSM isn't getting it done, I've done something wrong.

One mitigating factor here is that -- at least in my county -- we have to shoot from at least 8 feet up in a tree, period. So, you're always shooting down toward the ground. No excuse for that dude to shoot somebody a mile away, though, under any circumstances. That's Hunter Safety 101.

I imagine they taste pretty fatty. :-)

The deer here are small, tiny even. My deer last year weighed like 90lbs soak an wet. That's the only reason I say a 300 is too much gun for my area. Plus there is an aggressive thorn bush that has overtaken the landscape so the longest shot in the woods is 90 yards max (fields r a different story of course). I use a 30.06 and that's still to much gun. Id like a 308 but don't got the dough to buy a new rifle.

Just talked to my dad and he says no meat at all. Its to expensive to get it back across the country so he gave it to his guide and his outfitter (also the reason he didn't have his recurve)??

For a glimpse of eastern pa public land whitetail here is my buck from last year. Yeh its that bad here, this guy is a monster in these parts.

So no meat huh? just killed it for the fuck of it? I like you Clich so out of respect for you I will stop. I will say I have NO RESPECT for trophy hunters espesially ones that need other men to do all the work for them.

My dad is one of the best hunter/trackers I've ever known , and he is in no way a trophy hunter and he taught me the same philosophy that deer is the meat for the family for the year and you don't eat antlers.

Now this trip was an opportunity/gift given to him by his boss since he knows he hunts. He didn't know going in that he couldn't bring back the meat, which he can but it will cost ALOT of money to do so. He isn't keeping the rack either and the meat was donated to his guide and outfitter so its not going to waste. Also when you travel across the country to an area you don't know having a guide who knows the land is a wise move. That's how people get lost. And he didn't want to risk his custom made recurve bow being damaged during the trip so he needed to rent equipment, hence the outfitter.

I can understand how it can seem like a trophy hunt, which if you really boiled it down I guess it is. But he isn't coming home with anything but a story and pictures, and two lucky families are now well fed.
