Just wondering if anyone has had an experience with NM's knife laws. I've lived here for 9 years and have had no trouble yet, but if I keep going around carrying my Rajah II that may change... Lol.

"any weapon which is capable of producing death or great bodily harm, including but not restricted to any types of daggers, brass knuckles, switchblade knives, bowie knives, poniards, butcher knives, dirk knives and all such weapons with which dangerous cuts can be given, or with which dangerous thrusts can be inflicted, including sword canes, and any kind of sharp pointed canes, also slingshots, slung shots, bludgeons; or any other weapons with which dangerous wounds can be inflicted; (Switchblades, Gravity Knives, Springs knives are illegal."

it does say there is no limit to a folder or a normal fix bladed knife as long as its not a sword haha

Hi,

New to knives in general and this forum as well. Tomorrow the family will be flying from our home in the Cleveland area to Southern New Mexico, by way of a layover in Texas.

I plan to take my Mini Griptilian in my checked baggage. Anyone know if my Buck 110 that arrived today would be considered too long of a blade - even for a folding knife, in New Mexico? I don't plan the Buck for EDC. But there is an outside fireplace at the B&B we're staying, and I thought whittling some wood might be nice. Plus we're taking a horse ride into the mountains and I thought the Buck 110 might be a good choice for that type of environment. Anyone know of any issues I should be concerned with?

For that matter, do knives in checked baggage cause any issues?

Thanks!

first of all I would call the local DA's office and ask them what the law says. it is not like they are going to lie to you about it.
if you put your knife in your check in baggage then no problem. from my understanding if you do the same thing with a gun they want to know about it so they can red flag your baggage. that way nobody can take it out and steal it from you.

Excellent idea about the DA office. Will give them a call. Thanks.

Took a while, but I finally got the information I needed. The District Attorney's office suggested Fish and Game. Both places pretty much said "This is New Mexico, do whatever you want..."

As for bringing the knives on the plane, spoke with the airline and they have no issue with checked knives. No need to disclose they are in the checked bags.

If you disclose that you have something of value in your checked luggage, if it turns up missing you may be able to get it replaced easier. I have heard stories of things going missing from check luggage.

what I am saying about bring a gun with you in check in bags. that they need to know about so someone else does not steal it out of your bag and use it on someone.

Sorry that I didn't see this sooner.

Yeah, NM is kinda lax (I live here) but "do whatever you want" could come back to bite you. See jwblack911's post above for the specifics. Friend is a State Trooper here and basically you can't carry double edged blades (daggers, dirks, etc.), switchblades of any kind (defined in part by a firing button in the handle) or sword canes. But most any kind of conventional knife is acceptable unless you show intent to do harm with it. Not unusual to see someone with a sizable fixed blade on their belt in and about town.

But be cautious. Some municipalities have more restrictive laws as do many of the Indian Nations (aka reservations - they are numerous and quite large so it is darn near impossible to travel around the State without crossing through them).

So - use common sense. Carry a Buck 110 if you like. Avoid switchblades and double edged blades. You should be OK. And enjoy your stay. :)
