Sal, I didn't know that there are Military's in BG-42. Can you point me to a link and dealer info? Thanks in advance

Hi Fudo,

We're only making about 1500 pieces. They are quite expensive (CF scales) so there should be some around for the next 6 months or so.

I don't handle sales so I don't know who has them. You might have to check around.

hi new graham had them so did knifecenter these are great knives that won't be around long i bought three

I know this will open a can of worms, but I thought S30V was superior to BG-42. I was going to get the regular Military for this reason.

What are the advantages of BG-42?

Here's a very unscientific thread over in the CRK forum. Just people's impressions of the two steels.

That thread sucks. Just a bunch of people's personal opinion on steel. I was hoping to hear from one of the experts on the differences.

From what I've read it seems to be easier to get the heat treat right on S30V. The few articles that are out there say that BG-42 is very dependent on precise temperature control during both hardening and tempering. This can lead to different rockwells along the length of the blade.

But BG-42 is easier to machine once hardened.

If true (I don't always believe internet articles) this made it obvious to me why most factory blades have switched to S30V. It is less dependent on the precision of the oven, and once the tooling is set up for it - the machinablility of it becomes a non-issue.

I'm not an expert, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I do think I will get a BG-42 Military now because most of my blades are S30V and I want to try something different. Sweet looking knife!!

Ron at Beck's Cutlery might still have one available: 800-397-3830.
Tell him I sent you.

New Graham still has tons of them, I talked to them when I ordered mine and they had gotten in 200 of them...

i have owned mine for one week have used it on meat cardboard wood i have sharpened it which is easy to do by the way with whatever heat treat they did i have owned all the militaries and this one is the sweetest. i have also owned quite a few custom many great many not for a using knife i beleive mr glesser has hit the spot the military is just that large enough for defense a little to large for some people i have owned more production knives than i care to remember but for my money spyderco does it all just my personal opinion

Thanks Sal. Thanks guys. I have been waiting for this, as I really like BG-42.:)

Looks sweet! Don't know about s30v, but I have a BG42 sog mini autoclip x42 and I really like the steel (for me it comes in just behind zdp-189 and M2, and will also take a thin edge, though not as thin as M2).

AFAIK. it is a bearing steel for jet aircraft engines so it is wear resistant in spades but can be a little gummy and form stubborn foil burrs when sharpening, but, other than that, it is great stuff. I've done a lot of hand grinding on BG-42 since the machine they used to sharpen the SOGs must have run out of coolant on the x42 that I got, because an inch and a half of the edge near the tip had overheated and was burned dark blue with gold glints... that part was crumbly, so, instead of sending it back for a replacement I took it to the diamond plates and ground back the entire edge a couple of mm to get rid of the burned part... took days and I nearly wore out a coarse DMT plate in the process, but it was very informative. Once I got that done, I put a 10-12 degree per side bevel on it and took it up to about 15,000 grit on my Shaptons... very scary sharp! Very wear resistant stuff and the edge seems to roll rather than chip so should steel well. Wouldn't want to try sharpening it on anything but diamond, silicon carbide or ceramic stones unless I had a couple of days to waste.

I'd jump on a Military if I needed another knife larger than the Calypso jr or Delica (I've got the zdp version of both and they are my favorites so far).
