hello everyone. i was bored tonight and decided to get on google sketch up pro and design a new MIM blade. who knows, maybe Thomas will see it and like the look and bring it up with Tim or Ken and go with the idea. all dimensions would be to the current Kershaw Offset (3 3/4" blade, 5 1/4" closed, 9" overall, 8.5 or so ounces ect.) only difference being it would be a frame lock. It would have speedsafe (in my lil world) and no thumb studs. the stud lock could be put on, but i like it the way I have it ;) . Shading represents the 3D aspect. It is a Tanto recurve. the recurve being very very agressive and the 3D asspect very agressive also.
here are the pics.....

this is the blade. prolly my favorite part of the entire thing

the handle needs work, but i figure that the blade is more important thing

this is the knife together but apart

this is the knife together. prolly needs to be realigned a bit. imagine it aligned properly.

let me know what you all think about the idea. any changes ect. I like it, but thats cause I designed it. Yes it looks alot like Ken's design, but it isnt his. first its a tanto with a recurve, and it is really really 3D. hope u all like

Looks like it lacks adequate space for the index finger and the jagged edges all over would be pretty uncomfortable. I also think the straight portion of the blade should be at a lower angle like on the Speed Bump so if you want to say, use it on a cutting board, you don't have to put your hand at an odd angle.

ok i'll make some changes and see what we get. pics latter tonight

Don't forget you can selectively have Sketchup smooth the edges where faces meet for you.

Offsetlover, Looks like you are having fun!! Looks very unuiqe. One word of advice for you: Looks like the blade would have to be about .250" thick in order for all the cuts, champhers, and high lights to show up like you have them drawn out.
Keep it up.

Thanks for the advice Tim. Always nice to hear from someone who knows what they are doing. I will hop back on there tonight and make a couple changes. What would you suggest being the optimal thickness for a knife like that Tim?

I'll see if i can figure it out kneedeep. maybe smooth some of the stuff out, especially on the handle.

IT IS MY 300TH POST!!!!! :D :D :D :D

I'll be interested to see what else you come up with.

Personally I'm an advocate of thinner blades because they cut better and weigh less. The Storm is about as thick as I like my blades to be. So .250 would be very, very thick for someone like me. 1/8th an inch, or .125 seems thick to me on a 5 inch fixed blade, but I might be in the minority there.

I think the angles make it pretty unique looking, but it'd be difficult to balance aesthetics with ergonomics if you're going for a design like this. Some angles near the spine of the blade could work, but jagged edges poking up or a spine that comes close to a false edge could be uncomfortable if you're whittling with your thumb resting on the spine. Just some things to think about, have fun refining it.

Looks like the triangle on the bottom rear of the blade would poke your index finger pretty good. Maybe shift forward about 45 degrees to make something of a guard?

yeah i saw that today (i came up with this at 4 am last night). i intended it to be a flipper. on the revision it will be toned back so the finger has more room

ok guys, here are a couple of revisions.

first is a modified blade. the flipper is less angled and the tip of the blade is at a lower angle. I like my original blade better, but thats me, and Vivi asked about it. Also there are far less angles on the blade itself so that should have knocked the thickness down alot. Opinions Tim?

the second one is the original blade, but with the modified handle. not as many angles and is alot more rounded. the flat part at the bottom is because of my scanner. the mod handle is in the first pic also

That new one is pretty interesting. What would REALLY be something is if Kershaw could design a knife with a blade along those lines, but make it so you could retract the blade to hide the serrated part so you have a PE section right next to the handle for whittling and similar tasks where the extra leverage can help.

Were you printing then scanning the first few?
This last one, did you export directly to a jpeg from Sketchup?
You can really do something cool if you add a sequence of page views and export it as an animation.

interesting tip. will have to try it. yeah i just figured out how to export it today. i'll figure it out eventually

How long have you been using it? You look like you are doing pretty well to me.

about 2 months on and off. now that im out of school for the summer i have more time to figure things out. Im in the wedding business, so graphic design isnt that new to me. Im wondering though, do you know how to make it so that the blade is in 3D? the ways ive tried dont seem to work. I would love to post some pics in 3D

Interesting knife design you have there. In a strange way, it reminds me of a fatty MT Vector. I'd like a folder like this, but smaller than the Vector.
I also conceived something (remotely) similar some time ago, LOL:
