New Mini Grip - Horizontal Movement in blade + other questions

Just received a new D2 Mini Grip from Cabela's (exclusive). Would like to know if the following is normal:

Short Version:
Blade has about 1mm horizontal movement opened or closed and tightening things doesn't fix it. AXIS mechanism is still a little gritty after cleaning and oiling. Is this normal?

Detailed Version:
- When open or closed, the blade has about 1mm of horizontal play either way. HOWEVER, the play only occurs when I lightly push the blade with my fingers (lighter than I am pushing the buttons to type on this Apple keyboard). It does not move otherwise nor will anything rattle when I shake the blade in my hands. Additionally, when closed the blade will not "recenter" after pushing it off to one side with my finger, it simply stays wherever I set it (including centered). Can't tell for sure if this is the case when open as movement is harder to see. Lastly, it isn't so bad that the blade scrapes against the inside of the handle when opening unless I specifically push it (again, lightly like before) into the inside of the handle.

I have already tried tightening down all of the frame screws with a small Torx wrench. Even tightened the screw for the pivot until the blade would not move freely under gravity and the problem didn't get any better (or worse for that matter). On the flip side, the issue also didn't get worse when I loosened the pivot screw until the bottom of the head/cap was just above the frame. If it matters, I was very careful not to over torque anything and did NOT disassemble anything.

Is this normal and/or something I can fix myself without voiding the warranty?

- AXIS lock was a bit gritty out of the box, both opening and closing. After washing under warm water with hand soap, drying with compressed air, and applying a very small amount of oil to all moving parts per instructions in box, it's much better, but not completely resolved.

Is this just something that will get better as the knife breaks in?

- Not sure why or what it was, but before I washed it, everywhere I touched the knife, even the handle, my fingers would get dirty and turn a bit black after. Even after I wiped it down. Yet the handle is sand colored and looked clean. Blade, spine, etc. didn't feel dirty.

Just wondering what this could be I've never experienced this with any knife ever.

I realize this none of these are big functional issues and a Mini Grip IS a production knife meant to sell at about $80-100 and hence won't be perfect in every way (no offense), but even on my $10 S&W knife I didn't have any misalignment brand new out of the box (even if that didn't last long), the action was smooth, and my fingers didn't get dirty every time I touched the knife.

Other info:
Confident it is not a counterfeit. It arrived from Cabela's in the Benchmade box and it was sealed with one round clear sticker over the seams on the bottom of the box (I haven't bought Benchmade before so I don't know how they should be sealed). Knife was in the bag inside with a set of instructions. Everything looked new and untouched. I'm really like the knife aside from the above minor issues... even the FRN grips.

Wish some Benchmade pros would chime in here. I too have a mini grip that has some horizontal blade play. Tightening the pivot eliminates it but then it is too tight to enjoy the free swinging fun of the axis lock.

Remove the blade from the pivot, clean and grit or debris. Lightly buff/polish the washers. Put it back together and LUBE the pivot. If that doesn't work call Benchmade and send it in for warranty service.

Here is a video showing how to take it apart and put it back together.

Short answer: Normal in many knives, and from many different companies. The Grip is the budget end of the spectrum for Benchmade. Each company has their own set of "specs" and a slight blade wiggle might fall within those specs. If so then the company considers it normal.

Longer Answer: If you have to ask, then I do not recommend taking it apart. The best course of action if it bothers you largely enough to pose the question is returning it to the store and hand selecting a different one. There can be (not unheard of) some lateral movement in folders. Some more than others, when closed even a $500 knife will have a little wiggle to it, perfectly normal as you are moving the part furthest from the pivot.

There has been a lot of conversation about blades not being centered, and blade movement, and it doesn't just pertain to the Grip series...
Out of all of the Mini Grips I have owned, I have only had a couple that had sticky locks, or blades that weren't centered perfectly. I adjust my pivots so the blade will swing freely and find the sweet spot where there is no lateral movement, or if there is, it is so slight I really have to put effort into getting it to move..

Of the ones that had sticky locks, I disassembled the knives, and gave them a thorough cleaning and a very small amount of oil, and checked for burrs. I noticed on these that there was a VERY slight burr on the edge of the tang where the lock bar slides across. A little judicious filing on the very edge and it remedied the problem...

If you can, return it to Cabelas and hand pick one that you like better. If you are not comfortable disassembling the knife, you can always send it to BM for service.
Don't e-mail them about this issue though. Call them. They are very nice and very helpful...

This, and +1. First option is to exchange it. Second is (If not) to send it to Benchmade for servicing. Third, what you've described is not normal.

Didn't mean to step on the OP but this video helped. Took my 5 year old mini grip apart, cleaned throughly & lite lube. A little tricky putting it back together but all is well and vertical play is gone. It's amazing how much gunk gets in and around the axis lock. There probably is no other easy way to clean than a total disassembly.
Thanks for the help.

I heard taking apart a Benchmade voids the warranty? Not sure if it's true, but it's something I heard. Wouldn't mind taking it apart if it came down to it though. Guess I'll call tomorrow.

As for taking it back and picking a different one, that isn't possible, I ordered it online. I also used the original receipt (different products) already so I wouldn't be able to return to Cabela's either...

Although at this point I think I may have just got a bad one - I noticed recently on mine that the tip on mine is a bit screwed up too. I won't say it couldn't have been me, but I think that is pretty unlikely given that the toughest think I've cut with it so far is either a thin piece of cardboard (the kind used in small boxes that you could ship a folding knife or two inside of) or an avocado pit (didn't cut it in half, just into it so I could pop/pull the pit out) and I didn't slam the tip down into anything period (much less anything hard).
