New Mini Kit

I'm working on a new mini kit for pocket carry on days I'm in the field working. I used a new MatchCap XL for the container.

So far the contents are:

7 REI Storm Proof matches
1 small ferro rod (nanoSTRIKER refill rod at the moment)
1 pack Katadyn Micropur water purification tabs
1 fire straw (PJCB sealed in straw)
1 Exacto knife blade
2 Flies
1 Heavy-duty sail needle
? 20 lb test spider wire (however much fits on a bobbin...)

Right now the tube only has the exacto blade, an extra red phos striker, and two flies in it so still has room for more hooks, a few weights, and something else..., and I could maybe shorten the tube and the matches some and get a 20mm button compass in it. I think I'll try to add the compass tomorrow.

Great, compact little kit that really can pack a punch!

What's it weigh? I'm betting ounces.....

You could easily make up 3 or 4 to put in different placements and they wouldn't take up any space - well done!!!

I'll take one :) very well thought out little kit. carry it inside a alosak and you got most your basis covered

Thanks, I'm definitely going make at least one other for the wife's car kit and maybe a couple more. I'll get it weighed when I get a chance.

That is a neat idea, Brian. You really think up some cool ways to carry gear.

Bryan

Thanks Bryan, I've been waiting on Exotac to release these for months since I saw the concept and protos at Blade. They also come in orange :)

I have a question...would it be possible to make a more durable knife only slightly larger than an exacto that would fit in this tube say maybe 1/16 thick with a similar point?

Thanks I've been looking for a little draw string bag to put this and one of my collapsible 1 liter water bags in together.

I love kits such as that as they are far more likely to be carried than some of the larger more extensive ones !

Very cool, I have an esee firekit with tinder and a button compass but that is more versatile.

What 2 flies are you carrying, always like seeing the favourite couple of go to's of different guys.

I like the mini kits that people make that aren't only good for show. I take one everywhere I go, and the most often thing I use out of it is a ferro rod and some of the bandaids I have in it. (Usually on my nephew, from pickers and such where he wants a bandaid to cover over the little bit of blood).

Great little kit, bro.

Yeah, that was the point...make it small enough and functional enough that I had no excuses not to have it with me.

Great idea.

Thanks man, I thought so too.

Yeah, I have an ESEE kit too and love it, but this has more room in it for storage. I'm hoping when the new ESEE kit comes out it is about this same size or even a little bigger. Hard to tell how big it is from concept drawings with nothing to cmpare it too. The flies are little black flies, they're not my favorite...I'm just starting to use them and don't have a favorite yet :)

Thanks man, yeah I wish there was room for a couple of bandaids or some new skin in this one, but I like it anyway.

Mist if you are not too familiar with flies a #12 to #14 gold ribbed hares ear nymph(brown/grey) and a #10 to 12 52'Buick with a gold bead head (green with pheasant herl) will catch trout and panfish just about anywhere. Throw in a sparsely tied #8 doc spratley with a red body as well for a good all around attractor along one of your black flies. Now you have a good range of colours and sizes/profiles to match most of the aquatic fauna fish eat. If I had to choose just one it would be the 52'buick

Food for thought....the peewee dick nite in silver with the orange dot at the back is a wicked little lure, I have caught hundreds of trout on them, many times from shore with a casting bobber. For your little kit would be perfect. They weigh .7grams and are 13/16 by 5/16 so should be easy to fit.

I did not know esee was sizing up the firekit, that will be great.

Thanks for the input on the flies. I made a not to pick some of those up and give them a shot.

Yeah, ESEE is coming out with a pretty cool looking fire starter, looking forward to trying one out.

Actually I was thinking something more of a Wharncliffe or shallow-ish reverse tanto style blade, I want it to have a very sharp point for removing splinters and what have you. No differential heat treat since it is so small and then a sharply squared spine would be a good striker for the ferro rod and not dull the blade. It's a very small tube I'm using so dimensions would be 3/8" wide (max at widest point), 2-3/16" long (max over-all), and 1/6" or 3/32" thick. I'm thinking about half or just a hair over being blade and a few small holes in the handle to improve grip. Can that be done?

Yep, orange is a permanent addition to the Exotac line. Lisa keeps saying he needs to make something in blue lol.

Draw up what you think you want and let go from there. I would be interested in seeing you drawing.

Yea Blue would be cool to lol.

Bryan

hi my point here
take a cheap #8 OPINEL and use and grind its blade to your taste.
Easy and cheap ;-)
