I just installed a new high speed replacement modem...all by myself.:D The other one started to smell funny Friday night; you know, that "some wires are burning somewhere smell". I can't believe it worked the first time. Every once in a while, a blind squirrel, etc.

It's amazing how much you miss in just a few days here on the forum; or actually, how much I missed checking in on the forum. Bring on the 2 for 1! I'm ready.

Did you get the new 'vanilla scented' hardware? :D Good job installing it yourself, that can be a bit tricky the first time. Glad to see you back.

Good catch there. Here's the best explanation I've yet come across (by Bill Machrone in the 7/29 PC Magazine):

"Electronic devices can be mysterious in their workings, but let me share a secret: They work on smoke. The smoke is put inside at the factory, and the device works. If you do something to it that lets the smoke out, it ceases to work. The Bad Smell is closely related to smoke. It is likewise inserted during manufacture, and if you let it out, the device becomes inoperative."

Thanks guys,it feels much better to have access to the cantina. Russ, I agree with the smoke theory. I have seen it proved more than once.
