They've had these water buffalo horn handled knives in their Coming Soon section for a while now. Have any of y'all had a chance to see or hold any of them? I'm guessing that they're made by Queen, since that seems to be who makes their higher-end knives.
I'm really interested in getting one, because their fit and finish seems to be consistent, and one of the patterns that'll be offered is a stockman with a punch in place of the sheepsfoot. I've always admired that blade configuration, even though I don't think I've repaired any tack in fifteen years.
Anyhow, here's what they look like. Upon re-examination, I think that's a punch. What do y'all think?

I can't speak for those specific scales but MM knives are very nice knives.

The fit and finish of their higher end knives are of equal comparison to S&M. ;)

The yellow handle series and the new buffalo horn knives are made by Camillus. The smooth bone and jigged bone knives are by Queen.

I have not handled or used one of the buf horn or the yellow knives, but Camillus normally does a great job with the 1095 carbon steel.

I have the 3 1/4 and 3 7/8 Moore Maker working knives. They are a fine value. Fit finish and blade fall are excellent for the price. I think they are way ahead of the current Case 3318 and 3375.

I have a smooth yellow handle stockman It has been my EDC for 8 years. I don't leave home without it.

It looks like a Punch to me, but why so sharp? The last thing I need is to punch a hole, only to have it spread/rip into a bigger hole. On a similar note, I am lusting after the Queen Horse knife, with a punch and hoof pick...Am I really going to need a folding hoof pick? If it's a possibility that I'd have to clean my horses feet, i'd bring a regular $2 pick in my bag. Oh, well,

Joe

Michael;

If you have had it that long...its probably a bone handled model? Which model/size do you have? I have been thinking of getting one of the bone handle MM stockmans for EDC.

I recently (this week) saw a bunch of the new buffalo horn handled models posted on Ebay.

Boy, they are proud of them!
I kinda like the buff horn fixed blade, but with the yellow handled one going for $101, thats a little steep for my blood.
I kinda liked this little folder sheath.

Joe,

I was thinking the same thing, more or less, but I'm still gonna buy one. My hands are still steady enough that I can use a clip blade as a hole punch, so a sharpened narrow blade oughtn't present much of a problem.
And I was looking on Ebay at the Moore Maker knives and found this one , thought you might like it. Seems to me that it's the kind of thing that you'd pack along if you were on a long trail ride or working cattle, or in some other place where you needed to minimize the amount of stuff you were carrying. On the other hand, if you're at a barn or arena and have your bag o' goodies with you, then a two dollar hoofpick makes a lot more sense.

James,

Yesterday, I received my new Buffalo horn Hoof Pick Knife from Moore Maker. The fit and finish of the knife is fanastic. The Buffalo horn is VERY highly polished - almost to the point that it looks like plastic or glass. So I took a very fine grade of steel wool and lightly buffed the horn in a circular motion to remove the shine. Then I applied a light coat of mineral oil to it to bring out and enhance the natural color. Now the handle has a fine, dull, satin finish and it looks much more rich and natural.

I also order one of their knife scabbards that looks like a holster. It was much nicer than I expected and holds the knife securely. The sheath is made of top-quality saddle leather and is saddle tan in color. Both knife and sheath compliment eachother and make a very good looking package.

Finally, the 1095 blade wasn't as sharp as I thought it would be out of the box, but a few licks on a stone and crock sticks produce a quick and sharp edge.

Hoof pick will be tested tomorrow on the trail.

Best,

Tom

Quick follow-up:

Hoof pick works well although I found it to be just a tad bit too sharp at the point especially when picking around the frog. Friend/farrier agreed. He suggested filing the point square by taking off about 1/32". I did. It's perfect now. Great all-round trail knife!
