Hello Everyone,
The upcoming movie, “The Hunted” has released the first trailer. It has some very cool blade fighting scenes. The choreography was done by head Sayoc Instructors Tuhon Kayanan, and Tuhon Kier, with assistants pulled in from other visiting Sayoc Guros. Check it out at.

What kind of a knife is used in the movie? I think I've seen it somewhere before but cannot place it.

wow, i saw that trailer, think it is waay cool

who cares what the knife looks like? personally, it just looks like a wierd skinning knife

if i were to use a knife for fighting, give me a tanto anytime!!!

the important stuff are the fighting techniques the guys use, i saw the guy holding it in a reverse grip like a tanto, which i personally favor

some people i met at the NY show were telling me that the fighting sequences in the movie were going to change the face of knifefighting in the future

i've seen the fight sequences in Exposure (very cool!) and Under Siege (my personal fave), does anyone know if these fight sequences will be able to compare?? i can't wait to see it!!

i like the concept of using a knife to survive, you always have it, don't have to reload and it is a real tool

in my school of ninjitsu training, we practice knifefighting techniques all the time

our techniques are short and simple and effective.

who are the guys who did the fight choreography in this movie? anyone have any info on that?

Tam

Hello Tam,

The technique in the fights were taught and choreographed by Sayoc Kali instructors.(Tuhon Kayanan and Tuhon Kier) A Japanese Style Instructor and all around martial artist named Hiro Koda was also involved in the early stages of the fight coordination. Koda is a veteran stunt man and fight choreographer(Blades 01 and 02, Mummy films, The One) .
95 % of the fights were conceived by the Sayoc Instructors and Mr. Koda assisted in transitioning some of the Sayoc knife moves/pacing for Hollywood. The acting and stunt reactions were then polished by the stunt doubles and actors.

thanks for sharing that information Steve. So you are saying that the knifefighting sequences are filipino in nature? Do you know anything about the length of the fight scene or if the scenes can compare with UnderSiege with Steve Segal? How does it differ from that movie? i think Segal is the man with bladework, wow

my friend at work directed me to this site, don't know much about kali

is Sayoc Kali representative of all types of kali? what are some differences?
so, you are saying that the stunt guy learned Sayoc Kali, too?

Greetings and respects, Tam.

To answer some of your questions to the limited knowledge I have:

I believe that the fight sequences will really be much better than those of Under Siege and Exposure.

It is important to realize that at the time, the public was largely unaware of the various knife and blade skills prevelant in the filipino martial arts. And at that time, movie makers could get by with stunts and tricks that perhaps looked or sounded flashy, but had little substance.

Today, knifetraining is readily available to most people. It takes a better presentation of materials to impress people now.

I believe that Sayoc Kali is very different than most systems of Kali you will see currently being taught. For one thing, Sayoc Kali is a system that is taught "all blade all the time." Many of the systems commonly known, state that their systems are derived from knifework, and that may be the case. I do not know their systems. I do know one of the biggest differences in what we do , vs. what some other systems do, is that in Sayoc Kali we always have a training blade in hand. While other people will often use a stick in lieu of a blade during training.

I think it's great that you train with knives in ninjitsu. But if you have an opportunity and you like knives, Sayoc Kali is a must see.

Sorry for the long winded post.

respects, Guro Jeff

thanx bro' for the info

i'll have to look into some filipino martial arts training, i've been training in ninjitsu and kenjutsu for some time now, and bet that would be a good mix

hard to imagine how these fight sequences will be better than the other movies

the trailer looks real cool! don't like the look of that knife though, wierd

in tantojutsu we slash and want a strong point that will penetrate
that looks like a little hatchet or skinner, LOL--that's a fighting knife?????

Tam,
as you stated earlier in a previous post, it is not the knife but what one can do with it. That I think is one of the points of this movie and its significance to filipino martial arts.

In Sayoc Kali students learn to use pointed, and sharpened weapons to apply in various manners and techniques. I'd wager that most Kali practitioners would be able to use just about any blade to achieve a given result.

From what little i've heard, the knife was chosen by a wilderness guy, who was and is NOT a knife expert. The fight choreographers were bought in to show realistic uses of a knife. It's just too bad that the movie makers didn't let the choreographers choose the blade, in my opinion. Probably then, the blade would have been more in line with what people would think of as a fightng knife.

Fortunately, the blade design does not take away from the visual impact of the film, i'm sure.

I would focus on the techniques and types of skills they show in the movie.

If you'd like, contact me, and you can come by and watch one of my classes if you'd like.

respects, Guro Jeff

Hello Tam,

Where is your ninjutsu school in NY? I run the Bujinkan Dojo of Manchester NH. So, if you are ever up here give me a call and stop by.

All the best

Guro Steve L.

ps: Thanks for posting the Tracker blade link Argyll, I have been to slow lately in reposting due to work overload!

Theses knives used to be made by a custom maker. Does anyone remember who? I remember looking at a website years a go with many different Tom Brown Tracker knives. Mr. Brown's survival book is pretty good too.

...Actually I think it might have been Fighting Knives magazine, not a website.

The knife design used in the movie was made was made by Dave Beck not Tops knives. The knife in the movie has a slightly different profile and a different saw edge on the back. Tops is making the knives in production now.

You guys know what the kicker is? Those stunt doubles (lucky bastards) got PAID (big money) to basically train privately with BOTH Tuhon Kier and Tuhon Kayanan!!! DOH!!!
