I just got my new S35VN Mule Team Projects Knife assembled tonight and it's waiting for it's kydex sheath. I have more expensive knives but I actually ordered everything and turned some screws on this one! :o

Nice! I got the extra hard ZDP with green halpern scales.

Did you oil the scales at all? For lack of anything better, I rubbed margerine into mine, waited a day and wiped them off really well. Night and day difference!

Yup, mine were almost gray/white too, from the machining process. They were from Halpern Titanium - full size and contoured - unlike the last batch which left steel around the edges.

I just sprayed some Rem-Oil on a rag and wiped them down and they turned black.

A friend told me to use mineral oil but I already used the other. I've been wiping Rem-Oil on steel, polymers, gun stocks and G-10 scales for years and haven't seen any degradation of the materials.

I'll know in a few days if something bad happens I suppose, but they should be fine.

They'll be fine.

I wish I'd have waited for your post JNewell.

I asked my wife, who found an old jug of light mineral oil and I took the knife apart and scrubbed off the Rem-Oil with dishwashing detergent and dried it off completely.

I have the knife & scales in a layer of mineral oil for now and will wipe them down in a few hours and re-assemble it again.

At least I can use it for food prep now safely!

I just got mine last week. Came super sharp. I paracord wrapped it as a handle, but am still looking for a sheath... mind pointing me towards who you ordered yours from?

Those scales look much better than the last batch.
THink I'll stick with my cord wrap for now till I get around to getting some thin sheets of micarta.

I did manage to bend my own sheath for it. I used thick coyote brown kydex and a Spyderco G-clip which I think I'm pretty sold on as an alternative to Tek locks. They are smaller, cheaper, and easy to get on your belt if a lot harder to get off.

I really like the mule design, its ergonomic and about as functional as it's possible to get. I don't intend to test the s35vn rigorously but so far it's quite impressive. It came amazingly sharp, I smudged it all up when I got it and left it grimy overnight to see how delicate the finish was. Next morning finish was fine.
I peeled an apple with it, outstanding, though this is more ergos and the blades laser sharpness than much to do with the steel.
While I was cord wrapping it the blade whisped through a couple layers of skin, enough to say "you really should tape the blade before you do stuff like this" . Then I performed an impromtu "aquarium test", this is where you ACCIDENTALLY?? stab an Aquarium??!!! And I kid you not I saw this described somewhere in this forum.......
Anyway while wrapping it I inadvertantly dropped it from about 4 inches above the desk, it sliced diagonally through the leather square I use for a mousepad and contacted the plate glass I have on my desktop. The tip which is extremely pointy was ever so slightly bent, as in you could barely tell by drag that it had been bent.
This test proves nothing and is included only as an aside.

I really have one MAJOR dislike about the mule knife - there's no jimping on the spine!

That was a major turn-off when I opened the box.

BTW, I dropped mine on the floor and it richocheted off the carpet, went through my slipper and stuck me in the foot - but good!

DANNNG! My daughter thoroughly chastized me for my knife addiction while handing me wash cloths and bandaids. :o

exactly who do you order the scales from? I looked on the website for Halpern Titanium but only found raw materials.

Just call the number on the site, they do orders on the phone. They will offer you the full grip or one that leaves a bit of the steel showing all around the perimiter. You get scales, bushings and screws at a more than fair price.

I soaked mine in mineral oil for several hours and they're now a very rich black - beautiful.

May not be appropriate but I need to be enlightened about Mule Team; frankly I had never heard of it until today. Went on Spyderco website but would be interested in information from those of you who have had the experience; as to cost; availability; quality(sure it is fine), etc. If I need to go to another forum please direct me. Thanks

It's all on the Spyderco website. They make limited runs of different steels in the same configuration and some guys are wild about them.

When they're available they have a price, add to cart button and the type and background of the steel being used.

These just sold out a couple of days ago so if should be about 2.5 to 3 months until the next ones are available.

You can always google the terms "spyderco mule team" and it will drop down with different search terms. You can find an aftermarket one that someone has for sale too.

This S35VN steel sounded like the one for me to try out! My foot sure thinks it's sharp as he**!
