New Naniwa stones and Bester question

So, after reading many threads bought a naniwa ss 1K, 5K and 10K as well as a DMT xc to lap. Ran a couple knives through the 1k-10k with great results, felt like I needed to spend more time on the 1k to get where I needed to be. I assume this is normal?

Also, had a couple blades that were badly neglected (nics, chips). Decided to give them a few passes on the DMT XC to get the dings out then go to the 1k to get them workable. Felt like this was a HUGE jump and decided that I need something to fill the gap between XC and 1k.

Should I go with a DMT coarse or see about something like the Bester (Beston 500x)? Or Naniwa 400x?

I think a DMT coarse might be a bit harsh...is the bester 500 milder than the DMT coarse?

your best bet is the beston. or the naniwa chocera 400, no SS, it's cheaper but wears much faster wich is important at low grits.

i've done this jump a couple of time from my XC DMT to 1K shapton pro. my guess is that your plate is brand new or close. they cause a lot of deep scratches when they are new. after some reprofiling sessions the scratch pattern will get more even and i'm pretty sure the jump will be way easier. the 1K shapton is quite faster too but not that much.

thanks again for the initial advice. My XC did leave some scratches but they came off with the 1K SS. So you think the chocera in the lower grits vs the SS because it wears slower?

Even when the XC plate is broke-in it's still difficult to remove those scratches with a 1k. The C DMT is no problem though, 1k from that is a easy jump.

The beston 500 grit is cheaper than the DMT though so its your choice, both will do what you need.
