Hello, just looking for some opinions on a couple of neck knives I am looking at...i am a newbie so be cool :)

1. CS Paraedge
2. Becker Necker
3. Benchmade TK1-TK160

The main thing that I am looking at is one that wont "print" against my shirt, and it has to be light, fairly sharp out of the box. I might also look at the Camllius Arch Lite also as a real cheap alternative....

Thanks,

John

Hey John....

The Arclite and Becker Necker are Great little knives.. Actually been wanting to get a Becker for some time now....

I think either one of them would do the job just fine....

Don't like the CS paraedge so much,,and not sure about the BM,,although i'll assume you are tlaking about the Tether knife...

I think the Cold Steel Para Edge is a handy little neck knife to wear outside a shirt if you need a fixed blade for light cutting, and it seems sheeple-friendly, but the handle is too think to wear inside the shirt if you don't want it to print.

I have a Becker Necker and it's a slightly bigger knife, but much thinner. I don't think it would print.

I have no experience with the Benchmade you mentioned.

Hey sigman69, welcome to BFC! If you do a search for "neck knives," you'll see this topic has been discussed quite a bit. That said, I'll be more than happy to share my opinion of the new Becker Necker: I love mine, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I had an Arclite and really liked it (terrific knife value for around $20.00), but after two years of use, the kydex sheath lost it's shape and one day the knife fell out. OTOH, I had the use of a knife I enjoyed at a cost of around $10 per year! :D

I've never owned a BM Tether, but would like to. The Cold Steels don't do much for me, but if you plan on wearing a necker for emergencies and not daily hard use, even a lower priced Cold Steel will fill the bill. There's my .02. geegee

I have an Arclite and like it, and will probably get the Necker just for grins. Good choices.

One deciding factor is how tall are you? At 5'7" with a short torso I've found every knife on your list to be too large for comfortable neck carry. I've had the chance to try a Spyderco SPOT, it was fairly comfortable, far more so than the Arclite. Don't get me wrong, they're all good knives, but for me at least many blades advertised as 'neck knives' are far too big to lug around on a string. YMMV however.

I highly agree about form factor being a very important part of neck knife selection. The Arclite is almost 8" long!!! That's a bit big for super-concealed carry, granted it is rather thin. The Cold Steel has a very thick handle that will show up under a tee-shirt.

The Benchmade 160, however, is only 5.75" and is skeletonized to reduce weight. I REALLY like mine (GIN-1 steel) and higly recommend them! Not a big fan of knives around my neck, but this knife is very comfortable and I like the edge shape. :D

agrussell has an arclite made with excellent D2 rather than the standard 420 steel.

What are the knife's intended uses?
The Arclite and Becker are both on the large size for neck carry IMO. I prefer something small...very small...for neck carry. The Simonich Bitteroot works very well for me. The BM Tether looks like it would be an excellent choice.

Knock off two inches and that describes me, too. I like the SPOT, but the stock sheath is a little too blocky, which causes it to print more than I'd like. Even the standard-pattern handles on small neckers like the Newt Livesay LP jut out a little too much (though I love it.)

I recommend an Emerson La Griffe (just got mine) -- it practically disappears and it's very comfortable. You can also try Trace Rinaldi's Lil' Loco, which is tiny and fits under a lapel, but also makes a nifty necker that even the smallest frame can wear invisibly.

I forgot about the Bitteroot, I've wanted one of those since they came out. They're out of stock most everywhere now for obvious reasons. :( Hopefully Simonich Knives LLC will be able to carry on and produce them again, both so we can have access to a great knife and to carry on Rob's legacy.

nocomment, I agree about the SPOT sheath, bluntly I thought it sucked, but I think that about most factory kydex sheaths. With a good custom sheath it would make a great EDC.

If the arclite is on the long side then at the cheaper end of the scale have a look at the CRKT Fixed Falcon and Carson F4 - I don't think they are that thick to cause any problems in the imprint area. I carry a Fixed Falcon and it is a lightweight hand knife and keeps a good edge given the steel and the price.

hey guys thanks for the information...this really isnt a self defense knife, just general cutting when I have shorts on where I dont have any pockets.....I am 5'7 so I can see where a real long knife might stink to carry.....any other recommendations let me know....even the cheaper CRKT's are an option now

You guys are kind of losing me on the point of body/torso height and length. Why not just shorten the chain to fit your body? geegee

I heartily recommend the Bitteroot. Just big enough to be very useful, and will hide very well under a shirt.

It's a matter of preference more than anything else, I'm sure there are lots of short guys who find 6" neck knives to be perfectly comfortable. I, however, do not, and I attribute most of it to my height. When I wear an Arclite under my shirt, even with the chain short, any time I lean forward the butt of the knife ends up resting on my belt line. All I'm saying is that your own dimensions are something to consider when picking out a neck knife, especially if you're shorter than average.
