New new Wave

Ok, I have the original Leatherman Wave, and I bought another one in 2005, which they advertised as the 'new' Wave. Should I go out and replace my new Wave with the new new Wave (the '2007' Wave)?

I've poked around the forums and found most people were somewhat indifferent (and, if anything preferred the original over the 2005 Wave, and the 2005 Wave over the 2007 Wave). Anyone feel strongly?

How is the new, new Wave different?

I have the original Wave, which I like. I dislike the stubby bit driver and useless eyeglasses driver on the newer one.

Mostly I carry my Vic Spirit. My old Wave stays in my briefcase so I have a tool available at work.

I have the New Wave, the 2004 New Wave, and I love it. I tried a LM Blast for a little while, figuring the longer drivers were better, and also the space between the handles when using the pliers is bigger (The Wave can pinch you if you're not paying attention). However, I couldn't stay away from the Wave. I love the one handed opening of the blades. The tool is tougher then a tank, and can take abuse. The Blasts smaller flat head got all bent up when I was torquing really hard to get a screw out. One of my SAKs got all twisted up as well. Plus the handles on the Blast shift when using the drivers. I tried to get the same screw out the following day with the phillip's head bit on the Wave, and I torqued and torqued and torqued, and it hung tough and got the screw out. I don't know what's different about the 2007 Wave, but if it's anything like the 2004 Wave, you can't go wrong. I very very, VERY rarely come across really recessed screws, so I don't mind the stubby bit drivers at all. Whether you get a "new" one, or stick to your older one, it's a win win as far as I'm concerned.

I was surfing around the Leatherman site and found out they currently list both the (current?) Wave and the original Wave (under "Retired Tools"). Here is a comparison of those 2...I'm not sure how the 2005 and 2007 Waves compare (or am I confused and is there no new new 2007 Wave?)

Both Have:
Needlenose Pliers
Regular Pliers
Wire Cutters
Hard-Wire Cutters
Clip-Point Knife
Serrated Knife
Saw
Scissors
Diamond-Coated File
Large Screwdriver
Bottle/Can Opener
Wire Stripper
Lanyard Attachment

Original Wave Had but New Wave Does Not Have:
Medium Screwdriver
Small Screwdriver
Extra Small Screwdriver
Phillips Screwdriver

New Wave Has but Original Wave Did Not Have:
Large Bit Driver
Small Bit Driver
Two Double-Ended Bits (Phillips and flat tip eyeglass screwdriver, Phillips #1-2 and screwdriver 3/16)
Wood/Metal File
Ruler (8 inch/19 cm)

Weight:
New Wave: 8.5 ounces / 241 grams
Original Wave: 8 ounces / 224 grams

Size:
Both: 4 in. / 10 cm closed - 6.3 in / 16 cm open

So I guess the question is whether there really is a 2007 Wave. I convinced myself last night there was, but I'm no longer sure.

I think you must be thinking of the new Charge models, which are essentially upgraded Waves. There are three variations: AL, ALX, and TTi. All of them were released at the beginning of this year. I am pretty up on LM Stuff and I've never heard of a new wave since the one that was released in '04.

Hi,

Look inside the handles (you'll have to fold out some tools). You'll find a four digit number (month & year). Note, some tools have different dates on their two handles.

Hope this helps - Joe

i think you may be talking about the charge? because the new wave is the newest wave from leatherman, and on retired tools is the charge ti and xti so you must be thinking of charge
