Hello there! I'm just a noob saying hi with a few questions. I'm looking for an assisted opening folder with a blade approx. 3 1/4 inches long. I was looking at the Kershaw Leek with Boron Carbide coating (neat stuff!), the SOG Flash II, and similar knives. Any suggestions?
BTW: This is one of the best forums I've seen!! :D :D
Thanks in advance!!!

You should also take a look at Camillus/CUDA Dominator and Heat, both designed by Darrel Ralph.

Oh and welcome!

I'm a noobie too and lately I've had my eye on a Camillus Heat. Great design for an assisted opener. Got to wait until after the holidays though,...

If it is between the SOG and the Leek, I prefer the Leek. It is a great looking knife (especially the rainbow) and I seemed to be a quicker assisted opening than the SOG.

I have a Leek and I think it's a great knife.I don't think you'd be disappointed with one.

The rainbow leek sounds like just what you need :D
Merry Christmas and welcome aboard.

Hey Kyrosphinx, welcome to BF! (I remember you from CPF, hows the Baby Pin doing?) Any of the ken onion speed safes are great knives. I second the Camillus heat since I love that blade design. (I got my sizzle off of Darrel Ralph himself =D)

Welcome Newbie! :D

Leeks are nice knives. I wish the finger gaurd was a tad bigger to make speed opening easier. The ones I've used sometimes would just sink beneath the spine and sit there. I small pop would open it, but just wasn't the same and a Chive. Those little things really *pop* open.

Hey GarageBoy! I actually got a modded Bowling Pin, but it was dissected and the internals are now in my Minimag :D

Personally I would go with the SOG because of the locking system it uses. Kershaw makes good knives but most are liner locks and the Leek is included in that category. I've had a lot of trouble with liner locks over the years with them either sticking open, jamming, or closing while in use. I still don't understand why the knife industry has predominately gone over to liner locks as the preferred method of locking a blade. In my opinion they should be avoided at all cost. The Arc-Lock and Piston Lock system are both superior to liner lock in the method of how they secure the blade. Additionally the Dominator may look good but you are paying over 200 bucks for titanium and S30V but you are stuck with using a frame lock to secure the blade. IMO Frame locks are even more prone to jam and fail than liner locks. I personally have never owned a frame lock but I have used my friends on different occasions and played with them in stores and every time I've used them the locking mechanism fails in some way or another.
Take a look at the entire SOG line and Spyderco line. Both companies use either Lock backs, Arc-Lock or Piston-Lock. There’s a lot more to look at than the cool factor when buying a knife. The locking system should be on the top of the list then steel grade then the cool factor, most of the time you can get all 3. Unfortunately finding a company that uses a reliable locking system is sometimes hard.
