Received this knife in the mail today from my dad. Was curious if anyone could tell me anything about it. Apologize if I screw up the photo posting, I have never posted photos before.

It is a three bladed knife. Handle material appears to be stag?

It looks like it says 5383.

The springs are split in a "V" shape. Still has pretty good snap. I assume its pretty old, but it has held up remarkably well. This was a surprise because I never remember him using a knife like this when I was growing up.

Yep, the 5 in the number indicates Stag handle. The pattern is commonly called a split-back whittler. The tang stamp looks to be the one used from 1940 to 1964. Beyond that, I'll let the experts speak. Great old knife, congratulations!

Man...that is great to have a knife from your Dad like that!! - the photo posting went well...I hope Im not being cheeky...could you get a couple of photos? 1 each showing the blades out?...curious to see them thats all!

Sweet whittler Nights. Split back spring whittlers have become my current favourite pattern. Congrats.

That's a real treasure, coming from your dad, an' all. Always liked the little '83 swell-center balloon-ended split-blackspring whittler. Those puppies (and the even smaller '08s) snap like a bear that was prodded out of hibernation in mid-winter with a sharp stick, so watch those digits!

Here is a pic with all the blades out:

One last pic bridging the generation gap between father and son with my Northfield EZ Open (which i love btw! great knife):

That Case 5383 has led a venerable life, Nights. Someone took care to keep the joints oiled, to preserve the snap! It's recommended on that knife to only open one blade at a time, to not double-stress the springs. I'd put a touch of mineral oil on the stag also.
Still has lots of life left in it!!
