Here’s a just-completed hunter with sheath from Samuel Lurquin. The knife is about 10 in. overall length, W1 and ironwood; leather pouch sheath with crocodile inlay.

Innovative design, strong, simple, functional--in a word, beautiful. I'm looking forward to getting this one. He sent me these photos today--should be shipping from Belgium next week. Here's a link to his website:

I have to say, even though he's still learning to communicate in English, Sam has been exceptionally agreeable and easy to work with and tries very hard to please.

Enjoy,
Will

I love everything I've seen of his work and this is no exception - looks great! Do give us your thoughts when you have it in hand.

Hi Will,

WOW~! A great piece.

Good for YOU!

Coop

Another here who likes what he's seen of Lurquin's work. Filled with interesting shapes and
pleasing contours. That's a beautiful example of a hunter.

When I opened this I said.. "ooo that's nice" aloud. Great lines and contours. They are bold in both the blade and the handle and the sheath. It's a great looking package Will.
Any idea on the thickness of the blade?

Hi Roger, Coop, John and abcdef—

Thank you very much for the nice compliments, and I know Sam will appreciate them. I’m sure he’ll be looking at the thread.

Stu—

Nice to hear from you, and thanks for adding your positive take on the knife. Here are a couple of views of the spine—not such technically pleasing photos, but you can get an idea. I’m expecting thickness at the ricasso between 3/16” and .20” --

Thanks again,

Very nice Will. Really really liking that peaked spine to swedge transition. That's gorgeous and looks positively "spot on" in the grinding. Nice!

Bob and Stu -- thanks again for adding those positive comments.

Very nice, Will.

Is that another iteration in your design series?

Hi Guy,

Thanks but no, this is all Sam. The primary inspiration for this knife was a large 10" blade (25 cm) bowie he calls his "JoeKees" model, but obviously there was a lot of whittling down and decisions to make regarding blade-to-handle ratio, where to slim down and where to stay robust. I think he did a remarkable job of taking a knife that was of a completely different genre and carrying its primary design points over into this hunter. I told him when I contacted him that if he didn't think it would work, I would certainly understand. But he seemed very confident he could pull it off in a pleasing, functional way, and I have to hand it to him--he definitely accomplished that IMO.

Here’s the bowie that served as the inspiration:

Great looking hunter, Will. I am a fan of Sam's work and like what he has done for you with this knife. Anxious to hear your in-hand account when it arrives.

An outstanding hunter and sheath.
The ironwood, hamon and especially the clip/clipped spine stand out as
particularly impressive from both design and execution perspectives.
We've enjoyed some of Sam's work on the CKCA forum.
Congrats Will.

My thoughts exactly Stuart. Those might not have been glamor shots, but they made me like the knife even more.

Joe, Adam, Kevin and Peter--

Thanks for those compliments, and I too am looking forward to seeing how this one feels and handles in person. From the balance and comfort suggested by the dimensions and contours apparent in the photos, it looks like it should be a winner.

Thanks again to all,
Will
