Thought I would share a new knife I got in recently, Its the first custom I have ever designed (although Ryan did suggest some changes). I chose to go with Ryan Weeks because he already has some designs that really spark my interest. I named this one the EDT (Every Day Tasker) .The knife you are seeing is a prototype, the final version will be in S90V, just testing it out for now.

Prototype Specs:
9" OAL
1/8" Stock
1084 steel
I wanted a Lean edge so Ryan suggested a " Radiused platen that is basically a very flat Hollow grind that creates a very trim sharp edge"

On to some pics during use.

The day I got it, I was very eager to try it out, of course given my luck it was raining like mad out. This is the first thing that crossed my line of sight.

Next day I was finally able to take it out.

As you can see the coconut is young and underdeveloped, it had fallen from the tree too early, a great test for the knife. You can see the clean slices, for those who are unfamiliar, coconut is tough stuff.

Handles wood very nicely, stood up to batoning with no problem. I also did some very light chopping and stabbing. Not really what I would use this style of knife for but I really wanted to test the design. The grind is absolutely superb, bites in deep and is very capable. Ryan's "flattened hollow grind" is awesome!

The edge on the 1084 held up very nicely, Ryan definitely has his heat treat down packed.

After all the testing I was kinda hungry.

Oh yea, flawless in the kitchen.

Some comparison shots with some of my favorites.

The knife performed well beyond my expectations. I am very impressed with Ryan's work and cant say enough good things about him, he really goes the extra mile to make his customers happy.

Ill make sure and add some pics when the final version is complete, thanks for looking.

Thanks for the very kind words and for posting this up Jonas. You are definitely giving the test knife a work out! I look forward to your thoughts.

Good looking knife, congrats! Ryan is a great guy and great knife maker.

Great looking knife and impressive performance as well, I especially like the blade grind.

A winner in my book

Good looking blade. I like the continuous curve to the edge.

Yeah I really like that leaf-shaped blade profile - it's a natural cutter

Ryan is awesome. I really can't recommend him and his work highly enough.
Nice start in the custom knife thing, jball.

Will have some more thoughts sent your way soon Ryan, the knife is almost perfect IMO, I think I went to short on the handle though.

Thanks, working with Ryan is nothing but a pleasure.

That looks like a great user. Congrats on the fine knife.

Thanks

Thanks, the blade grind is my favorite part, it just lends to doing what a knife is supposed to do, cut!

Thanks Lorien,

You have some designs that really call my name. I might have to get Ryan to make me PIF one of these days.

there'll be another PiF knife heading my way, I'll make sure to post up a few pics fer ya

Great design you've got there.
That blade shape will do most anything you ask of it and knowing Ryan's handles I bet it's as comfortable as anything you've ever had your hands on.

Absolutely, Ryan knows his handles. In fact the only thing he changed on my design was the shape of the handle, I am glad he did. I will probably ask him to make the handle a little longer on the final piece, I think it might be about half inch too short, thats my design flaw though.

jaball, I love seeing that battle scarred patina-d Blade. I hope you get a good idea of what you want for your final design after using the Prototype of your design. I think you will be happy with a little more handle length.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
Ryan

I'll be getting one of his knives soon. Very nice write up sir and photos..

Ryan Im a fan of the used patina look too, seems that cutting sour fruits helps with that quite a bit. Cant wait for the final piece in S90V. Still trying to figure out what I want to do with the scales.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
