What's the handle material, really? Why the coated blade with such a bright handle color?

Hello,

The Rockwell Hardness is 56-58 Rc for the 1095 RAT knives. Ontario’s 1095 blades seem to range from 50 to 58 Rc depending on the knife style / line.

Handle material: Canvas Micarta, the color is the natural color of this synthetic material. Canvas Micarta has superior griping ability in extreme conditions.

“Coated blade” creates added protection from corrosion when introduced to wet / damp conditions. If you intend to use the knife in a marine environment I suggest that you upgrade to the D2 steel.

This is a flat ground blade.

The “Tradition” is; Ontario is well known for using 1095 steel in their blades. Many of their RAT knives are also made in D2 steel.

Thanks for your questions,

Thanks for the info. What sort of steel does the RAT3 with Ram's horn scales have? Is this more for humid conditions too?

Got my RAT3 Ram Horn today through the post. Excellent knife:thumbup: But still don't know how to look after this D2 steel:confused:

Will it rust? I am a novice in the fixed blade area so I don't know. How can you clean rust from the tang without messing up the scales??

The Ram's Horn scales look very good and grip is fine too, but there was a lot of waxy gunk in the grooves, cleaning agent I suppose but how should I clean this out and how to clean horn/bone scales in general? Thanks

D2 steel is corrosion resistant, (not corrosion proof). D2 will hold up well in extreme conditions. I can only give you my own experience with D2. Use it as you see fit or as your personnel application requires. I occasionally spray my knives down with Remington Teflon spray. WD40 is ok for cleaning but it is penetrating oil and it will evaporate. The Gray Powder Coat Finish is a nice feature of the D2 RAT knives. This finish gives the knife additional protection against corrosion. As for the Ram’s Horn, I have no experience with those scales.

In my opinion the RAT knife is a fine piece of equipment. The design of this knife gives its owner the flexibility of multiple applications for each knife. And the RAT 3 has a Multi position interchangeable sheath system that is out of this world. I would really like to see a similar sheath system for the RAT5 and the TAK knives. The RAT knife was definitely designed to be used.
