Ok, So im looking for a new outdoor edc, bushcraft knife. Ive looked around and like the Breeden KAT 4" model and the JK Kephart and cant make up my mind on which one to get. So if you own either of these tell me about them and which one should i get? If you have a differnt suggestion then those two let me know. but ive put two links for these two knives at the bottom.

Break away from the crowds and get a JK Tiny Terror Survival Knife ( TTSK ) !;)

I have both of those & even though it's probably not the answer you're after,I'd say that it depends on which one you like the best.
The JK has a wider blade & handle & if that suits your needs,go with that one.
But if you like a slightly narrower blade & handle, then go with the Breeden.

Both are top notch in terms of quality & they both come with very good sheaths.

It comes down to that personal preference thing.

Buy them both and then check out the Breeden Pathfinder. You will "need" it as well.

A JK bushcrafter is a bit between the two. Wide blade, but not as wide as his Kephart, and a thinner handle, again thinner than the Kephart. Simmilar to the Breeden, but a touch bigger I guessing. The bushcrafter is more breeden than the kephart, but more kephart than the breeden.... does that make any sense? lol

(I made the sheath in this pic, it is not the standard sheath that comes with it)

Check out this thread and the link there for part of a review I'm doing on a bushcrafter passaround.

ok i think im going to pick the breeden. is offthemapoutfitters.com a reliable website?

Sure is! Did you check out Brian's "Off the Map" custom bushcraft knife? I just got one. I haven't had a chance to give it a workout yet, but I think it's a winner.

I have JK Kephart & JK Kit, Breeden Kat x2, Pathfinder, Peacemaker and 2 custom ones...

The orange one above was the original kat - 3.25", and the osage orange one was a modified one by putting the Kat knife with the PSK handle. Bearthedog designed similar to this but with a wider blade.

Here is peacemaker and JK kephart , modified cat together

Breeden pathfinder - currently this one is my favorite

Another comparison shot - Third one down is a model I designed and build by Breeden called the BigPaw - it's extra long handle was developed so that I can use it comfortably with gloves. It works great for that purpose.

Some of the smaller ones - here is my modified kat next to the RC3. Third one below that is a custom kephart by CKE2

This was my newest one from Breeden - it has (difficult to see) a scandi grind and bocote handle. This new sheath style as his has a cross configuration so that the knife can be carried horizontal or vertical. I really prefer his new sheath style.

btw - John (JK) offers his knives in either kydex or leather. I've dealt with John and Bryan personally. They are both great guys to deal with. They both make excellent knives. As somebody else said, the one you decide to go for is really based on aesthetics. If you contact John or Bryan, they will pretty much modify your knife to your exact specifications. You can choose you wood, handle width, handle length, handle style etc. They also both do 1095 and O1. Can't go wrong with either of them.

I have a few of Bryans knives & love'em ! I don't have any of John's (yet:D) Bryan is a top notch guy to deal with & I'm sure John is also. I would contact either person & have them make the knife to your specs..you will really be pleased with the outcome ;) Which ever you decide to get now get the other one later & you will be happy for sure :D

I have to tell you - I have fallen in love with my BRKT's Kephart - so on that - I would pick the Stomper. I gave a review of his blade a while back - I can tell you - if you like his style - you are going to get a hell of a working knife.

Brian makes great stuff too - really you can't go wrong.

Also - ordering from Brian is a win win situation as well.

I think you have a good situation no matter what you choose.

I had a KAT and thought it was phenomenally useful. Wish I still had it. Had a JK Kephart, and while the fit and finish was excellent, it wasn't as nimble as the Breeden, IMO. Depends what you like. Have bought lots of stuff from Off The Map Outfitters, can't say enough good things!

I love really like my JKs. What is nice aout John is that be will tune a design to your preferences. If you want a 5.5" blade instead of a 4", fine. If you want a .25" shallower blade, fine. Etc.....

Don't forget the free Tin Knife.:D

Here are a few of my JKs

I am partial to my JK Hiker as my woods EDC.

Similar sized knife to the two you are considering.

Hi all,

I say get a Breeden too :D but that is because I am partial to them;):D.

Thanks for all the kind comments on all,
Bryan

I have a couple of Bryan's knives and they are incredible!! Bryan is a GREAT guy to work with! I can't recommend ordering from Bryan Breeden enough.

I have two of Bryan's knives. (well, my wife has one, but I use it occasionaly)

Here's my wife's knife and modified KAT knife:

I had Bryan make her a sheath with a horizontal carry option so she can carry it on her shoulder strap. She loves it!

I ordered a Tyson Bushcrafter for myself. I love Bryan's handles. They fit my hand perfectly.

I carry mine in a hunter's pocket sheath from www.knivesshipfree.com

The Tyson fit's perfectly along with a Inova flashlight. I just stick the entire sheath in my back pocket when I'm walking in the woods or going on short hikes.

Here's a couple more pics:

Of course, they both don't look like that anymore, they are well used now. Bryan's knives beg to be used!
