So we have needed a bigger oven for awhile now. I decided it was time to start putting all the parts together that I have collected for it. Here is the chamber rough stacked to get an idea to the size of the enclosure I need to build. I have caught non stop grief over my insulation thickness so we flipped the bricks and gave it a fiber board lid. I might go one layer of bricks taller but that depends on the clearance once I cast the floor and lay out the elaments across the roof.

Nice! I've started thinking about designing my own little forge and was wondering about round vs. square interior. Is it a matter of how big the forge is vs. getting that swirling effect of a round inside?

An alternative would be one layered of fireboard with bricks on top (neater look) or just 2 layers of fiberboard ( plenty of insulation). The insulation value of 1" Ins-board is much higher than the bricks, IIRC.

I am sure you will have a "lift" door.

JT ... if your elements are on top ... I am not sure you can have them in close proximity to fiberboard???

I thought it was higher as well but according to the charts I seen fiber board is right inline with K23 for insulation value. But I could be wrong and looking at so thing else.

I have not seen anything saying that. What makes you think that? Yes I am planning on running over head like my other one.

nothing specific .... just something that the local firebrick supply shop said to me last year about avoiding that situation .... but my memory could be faulty. if you find out something definitive ... could you let us know? (certainly using board for a span like that is much easier than trying to do it with bricks!)
