Well, after carrying my $.90 Columbia Backpack (which I picked up in my search for the $20 survival kit contest and ended up keeping as a daily user) I finally decided it was time for a replacement. I was pretty happy with the Columbia and had it set up just right for me but it was starting to wear and looked too much like I was in High School again. I searched store after store, looking for something but everything I found just fell short.
I saw a thread on another forum about a sale on the Kelty Peregrine 1800, offered at less than half of the going rate on the Kelty site. It's from their line of Tactical packs, but doesn't look too tacticool so as to not blend in with the other commuters. I got it a few weeks back and have carried it ever since. I couldn't be more pleased with the layout and construction. It has plenty of capacity (last night it was stuffed with my normal load and a projector for a presentation I did last night and three bottles of wine, no problem on making it all fit and was still comfortable to carry for the mile + that I walked between my office and the presentation spot). The straps are excellent, very comfotable and offer a nice range of adjustment. The admin area in the front pouch is next to perfect for me, great organization and a ton of space. It even has mounting points on the bottom to attach a blanket, sleeping bag or whatever.
It is hydration compatible, has two outside bottle holders that fit 32 oz Nalgenes and it even has a fleece lined pocket for your more fragile gear (I have my Streamlight and head lamp in there). If you are in the market for a new daypack, I would highly recommend that you take a look at this Kelty.
Here she is, I got it in Desert Tan but it comes in other colors as well....
