Ordered the Royal Robbins 5.11 Tacticals from WWW.NEWYORKCLOTHIERS.COM, and was very pleased with pricing, and service.
Got the Carhartts from Acadian Optical in Baton Rouge, LA.
Both pairs are very sturdy, but soft to the touch, and easy to move around in.
They both have PLENTY of pockets to keep stuff in.
I shall never wear LEVI'S Silvertabs again.
Both pairs fit me very well.
Both pants are very well made.

I have heard nothing but good things about Carhartt and Royal Robbins.
I can add nothing more than what already exists.

I have two pairs of Royal Robbinbs 5.11s. I concur with your statement re: the number of pockets. I especially like the way the back pockets come around to the side. I carry my knives clipped to the right rear pocket of whatever I'm wearing and the position the knife has thanks to the rear pocket of the RR 5.11 keeps it in perfect reach all the time.

I tried a pair of Royal Robbins 5.11s last year. Now I have a bunch of them and rarely wear anything else. :) Great combination of comfort, toughness, utility, and style!

My happiest discovery has been that those back pockets will easily hold a full-sized handgun. I carry my H&K P7 back there in a Robert Mika pocket holster.

I agree with the Carhartts. I wear my bibs whenever I can. I don't seem to be able to do any harm to them.

The bib pocket, when snapped, lets my Endura sit perfectly ready for anything that requires its use.

If I could, I would wear them all the time.

It really sucks to be living under the gun control boot of the Canadian government when you hear, "Those back pockets will easily hold a full-sized handgun. I carry my H&K P7 back there in a Robert Mika pocket holster." I realize this is for the Royal Robbins but still ...

Oh well.

That does suck! :( I doubt I will ever need my handgun, but I am a great believer in preparing for what might happen, not what I expect to happen.

All I wear for work and play are Royal Robbins. Great pants. Lightfighter.com has them for $36 a pair.

And $42.00 shipping to the UK :(

I'd spring for a couple of pairs... $57 a pair is a bit much, though.

Check Brigade Quartermaster and Ranger Joe's for RR's. I got mine from Joe's when stationed there. If anything the sizes stocked left me buying a size larger and hemming them - now the waist needs a tuck. BUT they are great! Everything has a place. All I have to do is remember not to put my wallet in the web belt. It seems to fall out! Nothing you can't get used to.
I still can't wait to find a good excuse to put pads in the knee pockets.

I've been wearing a pair of 5.11s occasionally for a couple of months now. They are good pants but I'm not as thrilled with them as I expected to be. I think I could find others that I would be happier with.

I am not crazy about the rear pockets as they are too roomy and insecure for a small load like wallet and comb which is what I normally carry in them. The "cell phone pocket" is not well placed for comfort while sitting. The knee patches are placed too high for protection while kneeling for a person of my height (6'2"). I don't prefer velcro for pocket closure (it is used generously throughout). I also find that they don't wear well with any belt I own except my very widest one-- maybe they could use some more belt loops.

I'm glad they work so well for you all, but nothing is perfect for everyone.

We have to remember that the RRs are only "tactical" because the FBI issues them to trainees. They have been around forever, originally in the climbing community. I am unaware of any changes made in them for the LE community, and there are plenty that would be beneficial: the belt loops are all wrong for carrying a gun, the back pockets do not make sense (too deep and cut weird), and the velcro needs to be replaced with something silent and secure. For us right-handers, the magazine/cell phone/knife pocket needs to be on the left.

Having said that, I probably own six pairs and wear them regularly, however they are no more "tactical" (I hate that word) than a pair of jeans or BDUs. They are nice pants, but have turned into more of a cop fashion statement than anything else. They are well on their way to becoming the next photographer's vest.

the Carhart Utility pants... or their version of the cargo/BDU/ 6 pockeet pants are excellent. They're made out of the same cotton duck as their other pants and jackets and wear a lot neater than BDU's. The cut is straight although roomy, and not baggy like the Royal Robbins or Military Spec BDU's. They also take on a very nice "casual fade" the same as jeans would. The pockets have a very nice center bellow with pull snaps instead of insecure velcro or fumbling buttons. And, last but not least, the belt loops accomodate 1.75 inch belts and looks perfect with a rigger's or emergency rappell belt.
