I ordered a Condor Kephart from a big box store a few weeks ago. Happy with the the knife, but not the sheath. I've read others rave about Condor's sheaths and how they are alone worth the price of the knife/sheath package. I simply cannot agree with them. The sheath that came with my Condor had absolutely no retention. Turn the sheath over and the knife fell out. Like pouring water from a glass. And the sheath refused to be wet formed without using clamps because the leather is somehow "plasticized". Probably from how they tan it. Looking for sheaths online or for someone to make a sheath was fruitless unless I was willing to spend what I consider a ridiculous amount of money. The knife only cost me $32 so I'm unwilling to pay twice as much or more for a sheath for it.

So last Saturday I was off to a very large gunshow about an hours drive away with the hopes of finding a sheath for the Condor and another knife I recently bought. The show was a large one, and my feet were barking by the end after having walked the concrete floor for a few hours. I was also toting a S&W revolver I was unable to sell even though I was offering it at a killer price. On top of that, every sheath I found was ridiculously priced which may be why the sellers still had them. Needless to say I was fairly grumpy by the time I was nearing the last of the vendors in the last row.

On that last row was perhaps the best display of knives at the show. The man and his wife only had knives. Nothing else. I was in discussion with the man about one of the knives on his table. We disagreed about something, and I came off as the grumpy guy I was at the time, so he responded somewhat in kind. Then I realized all his knives were from one maker and asked if I was correct. He concurred. Then it dawned on me, and I asked, "Who are you?" to which he responded "LT Wright". I just smiled big and told him he was one of my son's heroes and that my son would be upset he decided not to make the trip to the show with me. Mr. Wright grabbed one of his stickers, asked my son's name, and personalized a note to him on the sticker. The atmosphere changed then as Mr. Wright overlooked my grumpiness. We then had a good, but short, conversation.

Anyway, onto the pants --- I pulled out the Condor and the Nessmuk and asked if he'd sell me sheaths for them. He did, and I got both for $45. One for $20 and the other for $25. 7-8 oz leather made by JRE Industries. GREAT PRICES for quality products. Sadly, since I was still carrying the S&W revolver I was hoping to sell, I didn't have the money for one of his little Canadians. He'll be back in the area toward the end of April so I hope to pick one up then.

The leftover Condor sheath now carries a Russell Green River Hunter I picked up last week. You can see the marks left by the clamps which was the only way I could form it for retention. The leather is crap but the construction is good.

This weekend I'll deal with the too rough handle on the Green River knife and sharpen it.

Interesting story, leghog. I have absolutely no experience with fixed blade knives, but the sheaths look good to me, and I've read the name LT Wright here on The Porch, so there's the celebrity connection too. I usually enjoy my trips to my local gun & knife show, but they're much less eventful than your trip!

Glad you got a good result with the sheaths.
I think some leather is like MDF -made from the floor sweepings glued together and compressed into form.
I hate it.
The JRE s look great.

Good to see your story had a happy ending Leghog  I find getting hold of quality sheaths, to fit old fixed-blades I pick up, the hardest thing, and yes, often the original sheaths are not up to much. Your new knives and sheaths look great now

Yep, Doc Marten leather! Horrible stuff. Some of the sheaths for Sheffield knives are no better than cardboard. I only have one Condor knife, a big Moonshiner, and I don't find it too bad though, particularly for the low price I paid for it

I get a lot of knives sent to me for my sheaths to be made for them. I have difficulty believing the leather that some of the sheaths are made out of that come with these knives............(those dots are me shaking my head in disbelief). I mentioned this in a thread over in Sheaths and Such, that as a maker I wouldn't even know where to go to buy such leather.

Glad that worked out for ya Leghog. Gun show around here that Smith would of been snapped up pretty quick.

L.T. does excellent work. I ran into him at a gun show last year and really enjoyed talking to him and looking over his knives. Battle Horse Knives is another maker that has an excellent line of sheaths that they offer separate from the knives.

If I'm not mistaken, JRE Industries makes the Battle Horse Knives sheaths too.

That may be the case now. When I bought mine they were making their own. I hope they still are. JRE makes good sheaths, but I liked the Battle Horse sheaths better at the time.

L.T is good people and I count him as a friend. I also count Spen from JRE leather as a friend. Met both though an outdoor skills outing called Practice What You Preach(PWYP). It was amazing how many people from the knife industry attended that outing.

leghog - those Little Canadians by L.T. are great knives. I didn't intend to spend hardly any money at last years BLADE show, but when I stopped by to say Hi to L.T. I saw those Little Canadians and had to get one. I'd never played around with AEB-L steel and I loved how thin the blade was.
