New para 3 lock stick issue

Hey i just got a new para 3 with the black coating on it. And i think my para has a issue when i try to close the knife with the compression lock it makes a click sound like it got stuck alittle bit, feels like it went up to high. Everything else feels perfect but that. Just wondering if it’s defected or not? Thank you. I went to a knife shop and tried the same knife with out the black coating and it closed smooth, no click sound or feeling like it got stuck. He said it’s due to the black coating on it, that it makes that knife thicker. Is this true?

On my second para3 I could hear something like a click when when I would press the tab to disengage the compression lock. When I disassembled the knife there was a burr on the metal liner. I removed it with sanding and the click was resolved. This may not be your situation but it is another plausible source/cause of the issue.

When i disassembled the knife yesterday everything looked normal but i will check again today and try to post some pictures of everything. Thank you for your feedback.

Use it for a while and see if it resolves itself. Some of mine have a little click, and others don't. My dlc pm2 has none, my standard has a little. Not a big deal really, unless it's stuck so badly you can't disengage it.

Also make sure there is no oil or grease on the lock surfaces. If you do lubricate the lock, use graphite or pencil lead, or a sharpie.

Yea i cleaned it up yesterday and lubricated it alittle bit. Didn’t fix the thing but yea the guy from the knife shop told me the same to put pencil lead. Do i just take a pencil and just rub it against the top part when the knife is closed where it locks?

Just draw it on all the mating surfaces. I've never had to do it to a spyderco, but my sheepsfoot Griptilian had nasty lock stick out of the box and it helped while it was breaking in.

Now that grip is probably the smootheat benchmade I own. It's a sweet knife.

Gotcha, i will try that today. So for this issue it’s not worth sending back? I got off eBay from a legit seller since there sold out every where in all black I could return it but if it’s a easy fix I rather keep it.

Same happened to an S35VN Para 3. Sent it to Spyderco, they determined defective and gave me credit toward another knife.

Yea so is mine. And i love the knife besides that issue. But yours made that click sound, it felt like the lock was going up to high and slightly getting stuck right? I tried a different one and when i held the compression lock it was smooth, no slight jam like something was in the way

Use it, flip it, close it, open it to a point that you no longer refer to it as “new”. Then see if it has a problem needing to go thru the hassle of a trip to the mother shop.

Guys i fixed it! If anybody has the same issue, this is what worked for me. After further inspecting i realized that the rubbing came from the lock face engaging with the stop pin. So i cranked the lack face back. It would only rub when the knife deployed and the compression lock would would go to back. Now it’s deploys smooth, no running or clicky grind sound when deployed. Don’t know if this method will last but it’s working fine for now.

Thanks for looking into this, and glad you were able to fix it! I recently got a para 2 with the same lock stick issue, so the advice in this thread will def help
